I lived in Bridgeport for 35 years before moving to Ohio, and I'd consider myself decently well-traveled when it comes to BBQ places. On a visit "back home" I decided to try this place for dinner at around 7 PM (they closed at 8 PM this evening) and I was fairly impressed.
The building is a bit old, and has been a few other restaurants previously (The Gourmet Cafe, another BBQ restaurant, to name a few), but the interior is cozy with several tables and a nice view of the street outside. The smell of smoked meat hits you right as you enter, tempting you for more. There's also a TV for guests to watch if they dine in.
The overall cleanliness was great. Bathrooms were clean, soda fountain area was clean, and the tables were all wiped down and ready for the next day.
The menu itself is fairly simple. They offer a few sandwiches (with one side) and some unique dessert items. Mostly everything else is a la carte, with your standard offerings of brisket (per 1/2lb), pulled pork (per 1/2lb), sausage, and chicken (per drumstick). The sides are things like corn bread, mac and cheese, green beans, baked beans. It was hard to choose.
I ordered brisket, a sausage, a drumstick, and some mac and cheese. The owner was present and spoke to use as we ordered, and he was quite proud of the location and his food (and he should be, it was great). I tried 4 of the five sauces. To clarify, I had a carryout order. My order was also at 7 PM, likely after all the day's smoking and cooking had been done, and I took that into consideration.
The sausage had a good snappy casing and the meat was juicy on the inside. A nice, rich, meaty flavor with just a bit of spiciness to it.
The brisket was well-cooked, and was difficult to eat with a fork because it was so tender and kept pulling apart. I tried all of the BBQ sauces with it and favored the Carolina and mustard sauces (I like vinegar-based sauces), but they were all quite good. The portion of brisket was also quite filling! Definitely brisket worthy of being at a BBQ joint.
My favorite was the drumstick. For a relatively low price, it was a quality piece of chicken. It was well-seasoned and just a bit crisp on the outside, but juicy inside. Absolutely packed with flavor! I would probably get like, 4 of these next time and a side and call it a meal.
All in all, it is a great little spot for Bridgeport...ians to get some nice local BBQ. Menu is simple, location is clean, service is super friendly, and the food is great. I'm sure it would be even better were I not there so close to closing time. Definitely will be back on my return visits to...
Read moreMy family and I went for lunch and had a delicious meal! The smoking meat smell greets you before you even walk in the door which made us even more hungry walking in. We got build your own platters with brisket and pulled pork and sides of mac and cheese and baked beans. They also include pickled items, bread, and every bbq sauce option with the platter. We have eaten a lot of BBQ across the country and were seriously impressed with everything we ate. The mac and cheese was so creamy and the corn bread was moist and perfect! The meat was so tender and flavorful and no sauce was needed, but we enjoyed all of the ones on the side. There’s one sauce that has sage in it that is vinegar based and it was amazing with the pork! The only thing we would say that would improve the experience is if they also had an option of ribs :) We hear it might be in the future when a bigger smoker is purchased so we’re looking forward to that! There weren’t any high chairs when we went but we were able to eat fine with our toddler, you might prepare with bringing your own seat attachment if you have younger kids. Thanks Kaz for a great lunch, can’t wait...
Read moreWAY OVER PRICED FOR THE QUALITY OF FOOD!! Not all bad but not good!! 1st off this place is supposed to slow smoke their meats?? There is very little smoke flavor or smoke ring on the meats. It almost seems like it is made in an oven then thrown on the smoker as an after thought? The Meat (brisket and pork) both were dried out. I dont know if they are cooking too fast, too high of temp, inconsistent temps, or storing the meats improperly?? Some pieces were tender and some were dryed out! Sauce is admitted to as being sweet baby rays?? Come on, if you have a bbq joint you have to make your own sauce!! Jalapeno cheddar sausage links had a very very strong fresh pork flavor, completely inedible!! If they could figure out how to serve better quality bbq, I would stop back and try it again!! The people working there are...
