Edit Edit!!! 9/9/21 I’ve been back a dozen times since my last posts. Mainly because my office is close and it’s convenient. The drinks have always been good. So we generally Just stick to drinks and apps Now. I believe in giving credit where Credit is due. The Cobb salad is Out if this world. It’s my favorite thing to get. But I also believe In transparency. The lobster Mac and cheese needs to be called out. $36 dollars for a less than mediocre dish that consists of (1) lobster claw and a few pieces of meat. This was the second biggest disappointment since the failed seafood Tower, which i reviewed below. For two people to have lunch it was $176 for lunch. Lol. Absolutely Appalling. I mean that’s just crazy. A Dozen oysters, three margaritas, 2 Soups, one salad and one lobster Mac and cheese?? $145 plus tip😂😂😂
EDIT!!!!
7/12/19. Came back to King George. Due to the convenience and the beautiful location I regrettably gave them another chance. Boy what a mistake. KG added a new menu item ,a very expensive appetizer (a seafood tower ) and it sounded great! For $75 , they were offering a dozen oysters, a dozen shrimp and 4 lobster, crab, and something else boats .... As I’ve stated in my reviews. I’m not cheap. And I don’t have a problem with spending for good food. This new appetizer at $75 is the most expensive item on the menu. I. HAVE. NEVER. BEEN. MORE. DISAPPOINTED!!! Firstly, I’m not stranger to these towers. They’re common in lots of restaurants. But let me tell you this. The oysters were horrible. Most of them weren’t edible. I get better Buck a shuck oysters from anywhere else. The shrimp? Well they were shrimp. Not bad, but nothing special. And the lobster crab boats ?🤮. They tasted like cheap lobster crab mayonnaise salad specials you would get from a grocery store seafood department. They came on lettuce leaves and after 5 minutes of being outside , the lobster crab boats were Literally that.... boats. As the ice melted they floated in seafood water. I really don’t know why this place can’t get it together. It’s unbelievable. They must hire drop out chefs from culinary schools.
Between our drinks and food we spent over $200 tonight. For 2 people. And it’s just unbelievable to me that this caliber of food Is being offered at this price. KG. You have to do better. I would take this seafood tower off the menu as it’s absolutely awful and no one deserves to spend That kind of money for that low quality of a dish.
Other then that we had the pretzel and crab dip, the calamari and a fish and chips platter. The rest of the food wasn’t bad at all. The Fish and chips fish was flakey and cooked well but flavorless. The sweet potato fries were really good, the calamari was really good and the crab dip and pretzels was ok.
I’ve been to the KGI dozens of times. Not one of these times has ever made me want to come back. Unfortunately.
What’s sad, is that they have amazing real estate. The view and locale is great. The food is just very unimpressive. And to top it off. This isn’t an cheap place. The prices here are insane. I have no problems paying for quality food. I’m a regular city diner so I am no stranger to expensive meals. For what you pay here , it’s highly disappointing. I know they have been trying to do better over the last year or so but it’s just not enough.
The interior is very dark, gloomy and bland and partly because it’s a tribute bar , I get it. But it’s not an inviting feeling place. Some of the appetizers can be very good. But this place screams early bird and is the type If place your grandparents eat and would take you for lunch. With the amazing up and coming restaurant scene in the borough, this is surely last on the list to attend. I have never had bad service or an unpleasant experience. Just less then mediocre food and an dated drab...
Read moreWe were a group of 4 having a very belated Christmas gift dinner. This restaurant was one of my wife's uncle's favorites. The French onion soup was very good, nicely done, not salty, lots of cheese. I had the lobster bisque which was served with a little pile of tiny lobster meat sitting on top of the soup. The soup was VERY thick, too thick in my opinion, but overall flavor of the bisque was good, not fantastic, just good. The cheese steak spring rolls were very tasty as was the dipping sauce. The bread served was probably homemade but rather dry and firm and served with an orange herb butter and plain butter. My wife and I are Caesar salad aficionados and the Caesar was disappointing. The dressing seemed to be a vinaigrette, except there was no vinegar element and no suggestion of anchovies, which are essential for Caesar salad. Entrees: Uncle got a salmon dish which he said was very good. My wife got a crab cake and was disappointed. Scantily seasoned and a little dry. Mother got the fish and chips as half fish and half shrimp... a nice option. French fries, not chips, were homemade and tasty, would have been better salted after coming out of the fryer (or salted enough to notice). The fish and the shrimp were batter dipped....both soggy and undercooked...shrimp not even butterflied.
Having tried prime rib in many, many establishments, I have decided that a particular restaurant has the absolute best hands down. Having found that perfect rib, I rarely order it elsewhere...but I made an exception based on other reviews...it was a mistake. It was difficult to cut and a challenge to chew, furthermore, it had little seasoning on the outside edge. The Au jus was very good. It comes with baked potato but I had to ask for it after the meal was served sans a potato. Finally dessert. Wife got creme brule...it was OK but lacking distinctive vanilla...no evidence of vanilla beans. I got the small chocolate cake with chocolate ice cream. The menu failed to mention that the cake would be brought very warm, no molten inside, no frosting, not really served with a sauce. So the little disk of dry cake was served very warm on a plate that was 18" long and 6" or so wide with a golf ball sized bit of chocolate ice cream, garnished with some mini chocolate chips, was on the far side of the plate. The two "poles" (hot and cold) were connected by a trail of chocolate syrup. The service was on the slow side but efficient and attentive. The valet parking was very nice and the gentlemen taking care of that...
Read moreA group of us dined here for my mom's birthday. I think overall this restaurant is average. After some confusion (mistakes?) regarding our reservation, I took a look at other reviews and found other folks have had a similar experience, thinking they'd made a reservation for the second floor, riverview space, and then not having that reservation honored.
From Mindy M - "Made a reservation...didn't sit where I asked to sit." Denise G - "Disappointed...reservation for a window seat...told by Richard he would have one...didn't happen." Bonnie H - "...with reservations...disappointed in my seat as we had no nice view." Vicki A - "...historic restaurant overlooking the Delaware River...seated in a charmless room on the street side" Caryn G - "We had made a reservation for upstairs window table after talking with the reservation host... [hostess] insisted we follow her to wrong area...wanted the river view"
Caryn appears to be the only reviewer who was relocated to the table she was promised. We absolutely didn't and sat in a street level room with peeling wallpaper. It was also extremely hot.
Fine dining prices on some of the entrees without a fine dining experience. That said, the service was great.
If this business responds to reviews, they will say we were never guaranteed seating upstairs and that they gave us a discount. The second thing is true. They did comp part of our meal, but not until after insulting the intelligence of three members of our party, including the person celebrating her birthday! Absolutely wild.
When a restaurant charges a surcharge of 3% to use a credit card they 1, are not fine dining, 2, do not care about their staff (who do you think has to deal with the complaining about the surcharge and gets shortchanged on tips as a result?) and 3, are riding only on the history of the building and not adapting to modern customer expectation.
Maybe check this out for a weekday lunch, but do not rely on them for a...
