My girlfriend and I visited Two Stones for dinner this past Sunday, and we were very pleased with the experience as a whole. Arrived around 7:30pm, so there was some liveliness to the place, but not overly crowded, and the demographic was diverse enough for anyone to feel welcome (a lot of those in the bar I assume were there to watch the late football game on this particular night, though). We were greeted by a friendly hostess who offered to seat us, but we politely elected to sit at the bar.
A bartender named Dillon approached us shortly thereafter, menus in hand. Dude was really laid back but also professional and knowledgable about the drinks and menu items. I'm a huge craft beer guy, so I have a discerning taste for what I drink as far as brews go. If you are the same, Two Stones will not disappoint you. Not only do they have about 20 different beers from multiple different breweries around the country on tap, but they also brew their own beers, which were surprisingly delicious. In addition to all of this, flip the drinks menu over and you will find a respectable list of what they describe as "Reserve" beers. Similar to what you would find with an aged or rare wine menu, it consisted of all beers that were cellared for years to improve their taste, or just extremely hard to find beers. The varieties ranged from Belgian ales to Barleywines and everything in between. Didn't partake of any this time, but I certainly plan to on a future visit; that's a selection that is very hard to find.
Anyway, I ordered a flight of 5 of their own beers, all of which were delicious, and paired well with the food that we ordered. My girlfriend ordered a mixed drink that had pineapple juice and habenaro extract in it, which was also quite good and a departure from the norm.
We ordered mussels in a reduction made from their house witbier amongst other ingredients, which was great. I ordered the "How About Them Apples?" mac and cheese, which I could instantly tell was made with REAL CHEESE and cream because of its richness. There were sliced sausage pieces stuffed with apples, spinach, and mushrooms in it as well. Excellent dish. She ordered a turkey burger that was HUGE! So big that she couldn't possibly eat it. But the front of house manager that delivered it actually suggested that because the burger consisted of two patties, he could bring another bun and the second patty could be eaten the next day or something. So that was a nice customer service experience.
Long winded, I know. But the experience overall was excellent. Nice cozy little bar with way-better-than-your-average-pub food, craft beer fan service as well as good mixed drinks, and pleasant customer service....
Read moreFirst time at a Two Stones Pub. Went with my partner. Thursday night the place was not too busy. I appreciate the happy Buddah statue decor near the entrance; it give the palce a unique and fun flare. The TVs around Us were showing video games and poker which was great for me since I don't really watch sports. They are also doing a food drive since I saw a box with cans in it. Not sure how long they're doing it though.
As I took a look at the menu - at first glance it seems like a standard American bar menu with burgers, fries, nachos, salads, wings, and sandwhiches, but upon further reading I noticed the ingredience are a bit diffrent. This is where it really stands out. Subtle changes to some classic foods really shines at this place. Example: PeeBee & Jay Burger/Dirty Kettle Chips
Overall we had a pleasant experience at this place and really feels like we could be regulars. Service is good, food is good, drinks, good, and portion sizes are excellent.
(2) Alcoholic beverages, (1) appitizer, and (2) entrees. Bill came out to about $61. (Not including tip)
Shout out to our server JASON. He was very attentive, we watched him keep that same energy with the other tables around us. Very honest and knowledgeable about the menu. Helped us pick items on the menu, gave us really accurate descriptions of the foods and drinks. Great personality energy and helpful, Drinks: beer and seasonal sangria (good) Food: Caribbean Sweet Potato Fries - We ordered a small, the portion size was great to share for twc people. The jerk sauce gives the fries a spicy kick to them which is a slow build up the more you eat. The salsa was great and really balanced out the spice, 1 appreciate the quality of mangos being just perfect (not too tarte or super sweet). Sweet potatos weren't very sweet but that was fine with me since I generally don't eat sweet potatos. These were propbably the best sweet potato fries I've ever had. Fish Tacos with a side of garden salad with Herb Vinegrett dressing - Fish Tacos were good. the sauce was spicy, a lot spicier than I expected. Fish was well fried and good size. It didn't have a fishy taste to them so it felt fresh. The Herb Vinegrett dressing was sooooo goooood. I wish i had more of it. I can't even describe it other than it was so good.
Chopped Santa Fe Salad with requested Jerked Chicken - Chicken was well cooked and juicy. Just the right amount of dressing and chicken. Ratio of sauce to salad was well balanced. Jerked chicken had its own flavor which added to the salad as a whole.Overall...
Read moreI used to visit the original Newark location pretty often. I've been to this one a few times now since it opened and while the food is typically good, I do have a few gripes.
Happy Hour seems to be advertised everywhere, but apparently, it is only available at the bar or sitting at high top tables. This is rather ridiculous. First of all, why should where you sit change the availability of a special or menu? Yeah I get it, you want the bar to look like there's a crowd... But this isn't that type of place to have that busy bar vibe. Also, when greeted by the hostess, we were not asked where we wanted to sit.
The kids menu needs some work. You have a section for "Proteins" and "Sides", except I wouldn't really call Mac & Cheese or Buttered Noodles a protein. So maybe call the section "Mains" or "Entrees". Of the 7 choices, only 3 of them are actually meat options. The side of the Mac & Cheese was what I would call a side dish, especially for an older kid. $9 for the options given is rather pricy. You guys have better food and creativity than this.
I used to love the Truffle Fries, but lately, there's barely any truffle taste to them. I know it says it's homemade truffle oil, but you should consider just using something premade because the truffle is almost non-existent. One time, I did complain that there was no truffle oil and they brought me a small side of it, and it tasted like straight up canola oil. $15 for a large plate of fries is pretty pricy when it doesn't live up to the description.
I had the Spicy Tuna Poke... It was 3x pieces somewhat resembling a deconstructed sushi room... So it was pretty much a little more than 3 bites. Not sure I'd call this a Shareable dish. At $18, I was pretty disappointed in the portion size... And most of the dish was rice.
We'll likely be back, but I wish the menu was a...
