Tern Coffee & Tea — Restaurant in Brunswick

I am not sure if this is normal or just because I came at opening time (7:30), but they had a dog (and it was German Shepherd, not a little fluff fluff) who came running to greet me when I was about to enter. I ran away, but there is no world in which that should have happened.

Non- service animals are NOT allowed in cafes. Period.

I have a rare connective tissue disease called Ehlers Danlos syndrome which makes me super fragile. I’m terrified of dogs (had dog spray in my purse just then so I would have sprayed if he had chased me out the door), because I have had dogs dislocate my hip, tear a tendon in my arm, dislocate a wrist etc.

I dont expect to go to a cafe and encounter a dog, let alone an unleashed one. Really didn’t want to start my day with an adrenaline rush and tight muscles that now ache.

And I even offered to help hold the door so the person opening could carry chairs out, before I intended to come in and order a coffee.

Just…very rude awakening for my day, and I’m gonna be sore from it at least today.

Response to owner’s reply: The owner responded that the dog is a service dog, not “I’m so sorry this happened. The dog is my emotional support animal, and normally the dog is leashed (which is by law a requirement for service animals, and, actually, emotional support animals are not covered under ADA, because they don’t perform a specific task).

I was told a special exception could be arranged whereby the owner would obey the actual law. Really?!

As someone who is disabled, it’s honestly angering when another person claiming a disability abuses the system. ADA requires service animals to be leashed at all times. You are a food establishment serving customers!!! Wow! I won’t be back, and I’m...

Found our new favorite cafe in the lower midcoast! Both our tea and coffee were great. They're clearly very intentional about their sourcing for both coffee and tea, as well as their brewing processes. And they've got loose leaf! This is so exciting to see as someone who only drinks tea. We will for sure be back every time we're in Brunswick. Immediate warmth and open arms vibe. I had a client running behind, so I took a stroll down Main Street And stumbled up on this place by chance.
