Such a great experience. Manager, Dana, stopped by and introduced himself and checked on us periodically throughout what we like to call our “tour of the menu”. This place will not be a ‘hidden gem’ for long. We loved every item our party tried. Clearly, fresh ingredients with a lot of care and love gone into this menu.
Beets in the beet and goat cheese salad were perfectly cooked, arugula fresh and not bitter, candied walnuts not over sugared/coated. Meatballs and Burrata cheese was a crowd favorite. Burrata cheese wasn’t just slapped on the plate like other places. Drizzled with a little olive oil, salt and pepper and topped with fresh basil leaves. Garlic bread melted in your mouth. Side of asparagus grilled to perfection- crunchy and green- as if it was picked out of the garden before hitting the grill- delicious. Seafood Brodetto over polenta was phenomenal! Fennel in brodetto doesn’t over power the seafood. At first, squid looked as though it may be overcooked but, I was proven wrong upon first bite! Squid in brodetto was tender and flavorful.
Cocktail - I was drinking the ‘Rusty Pipe’. It’s like an old fashioned with chocolate bitters and amaro. My friend was drinking the ‘boozy but healthy’ . I don’t care for tequila, so I asked our server if it could be made with vodka so I could try. They accommodated my request, without question, and it was amazing. Halibut piccata was expertly seared. Piccata sauce was mild and not too lemony or overly salty from capers. Based on the amount of food we ordered, we were pleasantly surprised at how much we loved each dish and couldn’t find fault in any of them.
Desserts were on another level. We ordered a couple of each and all ordered an espresso drink. Espresso was fresh, smooth and not bitter. Desserts were larger portions than we anticipated. Cassada cake with pistachios and almond slivers was out of this world. Tiramisu was such a large portion that I chuckled when it was placed in front of me. Cannoli were fresh, crunchy and the addition of candied orange zest was a bold innovation that exceeded expectation.
We had a lot more food than I’ve mentioned in this lengthy review but, the ones I mentioned are my personal favorites. I literally cannot believe how much I loved every aspect of this dinner. We rarely get to go out and enjoy a dinner as exquisite as this one, so expectations are usually high, leading to disappointment. This was not the case! All of our expectations were far exceeded. Thank you for such a memorable and delightful experience. Commitment to excellence is #1 here, and it shows!
Thank you Dana, and the staff for your hospitality and a memorable experience at...
Read moreCame in for dinner on a Friday night, we were in town for a wedding and looking at where to eat while researching the area, we made a reservation here. When we told the "locals" where we were eating, they were excited for us to enjoy this new restaurant and said we would not be disappointed. We were not. This is a cute place in a cute neighborhood, in what might have been an old bar or house at one time. It was a lively crowd. We made reservations for 7:30, arriving at 7:27. We checked in and in the busy bar, they were serving crudites and some sandwiches while you wait, or while enjoying cocktails. The bar was hopping, lots of spritz and cocktails being made. We waited for maybe 10-15 minutes when I noticed the host that checked us in, walking around with menus looking for a party to seat. She checked in with several people, including a group near us. I couldn't hear her, but it looked like she might be saying our name. She walked past us, and when she came back I asked who she was looking for, and indeed it was us. Not sure why she walked past us. They have a patio and a main dining area, we were seated in the back lounge. That worked well for as we had my 80 something in-laws with us and the lively dining area would have been difficult for them to talk and hear. We ordered cocktails and reviewed the menu. The cocktails did take a while to arrive, but like I said, it was a busy bar. My Hugo spritz seemed off, it tasted more like a limencello spritz, I am not sure if it was a mistake, but based on how long it took to get it, I kept it.
We started with the Fried Lion's Head cake, which is a mushroom cake (think crab cake). It was okay. The mushrooms had a meaty texture, but it seemed a little overcooked and dry. I ordered the Bucatini All'Amatricaiana, my husband ordered the Carbonara, and my in-laws both order the small portion spaghetti, one with vodka sauce, the other the tomato sauce. They both ordered meatballs. I was impressed with the size of guancaile chunks in both the Amatricaina and Carbonara, most places dice them very small, not here. The pasta was cooked perfectly, with a bit of chew. My sauce was bright and fresh. My husband's carbonara, might have had outside of Italy. It was a creamy, luscious sauce - delicious. I was very jealous of his choosing. My in-laws liked their sauces, we did get a bit of the meatballs, they are huge, tender and very tasty.
All-in-all, we had a great meal, enjoyed a lively atmosphere, and would return if in Buffalo. I did read a couple of bad reviews when researching, not sure if that was a bad night, but our experience...
Read moreCame into this place with such high hopes and they were shattered. Had a 7:30 reservation and were told to wait at the bar and they’d let us know when our table was ready. The bar space was packed, eventually got a bar spot after the folks in front of us decided to leave because they’d been waiting 30 minutes for a reservation and decided to go to the restaurant across the street. The bartenders seemed supremely stressed by the surge of people (all the staff throughout the night seemed to do as best they could but were put in a position by management to fail). Eventually got a drink and the dirty vodka martini that I ordered off the cocktail menu didn’t have an olive garnish. Assumed it was because they were so busy they ran out but the customer who ordered a drink promptly after us was asked what garnish he wanted on his gin martini and got olives. Eventually 40 minutes after our reservation we asked the hostess how long it would be for our table to be ready. They said within 5 minutes. 20 minutes later we were seated (a full 1 hour after our reservation). No one so much as apologized for the wait and just ignored it as if it didn’t happen. The table next to us had the exact same 7:30 reservation with an hour wait and they asked to speak with the manager who didn’t do anything to attempt to make the situation right for the customers. That table also informed us the hostess said the reason for the wait time was because the restaurant had overbooked its reservations (I’m pretty sure if we had shown up an hour late for our reservation we wouldn’t have been welcome with open arms tho). Meanwhile at our table we ordered our food and it was a mixed bag. The ricotta appetizer was fantastic but the eggplant parm was drowning in a watery red sauce and the pasta and vodka sauce on the side of the entree was overcooked and weirdly spicy. In terms of atmosphere, it was so loud we needed to yell to hear each other and heard other tables shouting similar sentiments in their conversations. If you value your time and worth as a consumer I would not go here. Some of the worst customer service in action I’ve ever witnessed and everything about the experience was...
