Rolled into Under Grounds Coffee at exactly 7:47 AM—the same time Lou Holtz allegedly once claimed the Irish would “find spiritual clarity through caffeine.” That’s not a coincidence. That’s destiny.
From the first step inside, I was greeted by the legend herself: Nicole, aka “Nikki.” I’m 97% sure she was either once a Notre Dame cheerleader or tased a Michigan fan in the parking lot and got a standing ovation for it. She brings the energy of a triple-overtime win and the kind of confident sarcasm that makes you feel seen, judged, and somehow deeply affirmed all at once.
I ordered the "Manti Te’o Mocha" — rich, real enough, and somehow still a little imaginary. My companion went with the "Brady Quinn Cold Brew Blitz"—comes with a protein shot, a Hail Mary, and a very specific warning not to operate heavy machinery or defensive schemes after consumption.
Even the bathroom had serious vibes. The kind that makes you consider your life choices… or whether Knute Rockne is watching you wash your hands.
Bottom line: Under Grounds Coffee is where caffeine, college football, and unfiltered personality collide in glorious fashion. And if you’re lucky enough to have Nikki take your order? Tip her like she just ran back a 99-yard kickoff return and winked at you in the end zone.
Go Irish. Drink local....
Read moreJust visited here for the first time from O-H. Ordered a flavored iced coffee & the breakfast sandwich named after my great aunt! Absolutely incredible, with homemade artisanal blackberry jam embedded! My wife also picked out the RBG roast and we took with us a cake pop/ cookie for our daughter’s 17th birthday. Turns out that my great grandfather once used this space as a pharmacy on the first level and lived above. Appears to be original black/ white tile and wood flooring; the history of this place is alive and well.
Everyone was very friendly- would love to visit again next time we’re in WNY. The owners are obviously doing it right- their community impact, celebrating women connected to Buffalo, and ensuring that environmental impact is minimal. Really enjoyed the wall of coffee mugs, dog treat offerings, and overall decor, as well.
I’ve additionally attached a photo of the letter addressed to Frank re: Jean’s service (sent to this exact address), American Red Cross bronze medal, awarded posthumously, & a copy of what was a confidential correspondence in connection to the circumstances of Jean’s untimely passing. Pretty interesting…
Highly recommend that anyone in the area supports this business!...
Read moreSo happy to have this in the neighborhood. It's a proper coffee house with top notch coffee and food, multi level seating, and plenty of space for people to spread out and enjoy the cafe for hours, while drinking, reading, working, etc. The food is thoughtful with names related to Buffalo and coffee pioneers, and are unique and tasty. There is even an extensive kids menu for little tikes who come to the cafe. The decor is phenomenal, with custom painted murals all around you, featuring bright colors, and a mix of day of the dad and New Orleans jazz themes- which really pulls the multiple rooms together. They even do local events like Trunk or Treat, a Christmas Tree lighting, and do candle light yoga. The ladies who run the place are passionate about the product, and put a lot of thought and time into each recipe and each drink- even where the coffee comes from. The beans are freshly roasted every week, so you are getting the freshest coffee possible overtime you come in. Also, their t-shirts that they sell are incredibly soft and super comfortable. You need to check it out...
