Sichuan Gourmet used to be one of our favorite restaurants in the Greater Boston area — a place we enjoyed for many years. Unfortunately, our experience yesterday completely changed that impression.
My daughter has a peanut allergy, which we clearly communicated to our waitress multiple times — both before and during our order of appetizers and main courses. The waitress assured us that every dish would be marked as peanut-free. However, partway through the meal, my daughter began to feel discomfort in her throat. When we checked the “Chicken with Cashew Nuts” dish, we discovered several whole peanuts. The waitress took them to show the chef.
Thankfully, it seems she did not consume a whole peanut, and the reaction was likely caused by cross-contamination. Still, the situation could easily have become life-threatening.
The staff was polite and apologetic, and they offered us complimentary dessert, which we declined as we left quickly to get my daughter treated. For the first time in over 30 years, I did not leave a tip — not out of anger, since this was not a matter of service quality, but of safety.
This experience was deeply concerning, and I sincerely hope the restaurant reviews its allergy-handling procedures carefully to prevent such incidents...
Read moreHorrible seating. Cramped and tightly packed. The staff was cold and rude. They drop food off and hope it doesn't fall off of their tiny tables. No one comes to check if you need a refill on the small water cups.
Only thing worse than their angry faces was the food. Everything was dry, not properly seasoned, and below quality compared to even the most average Chinese restaurants.
We had to wait for our dead faced waitress to grace us with her funeral home presence to bring us the check. She never came, so a different, Shaw Brothers-esque baddie waitress was sent over. Somehow she made the first waitress seem like Julie Andrews. She took her time bringing us our check then disappeared somewhere into the shadows and we were left waiting again for someone to take the payment.
My partner, who normally is a 15% plus tipper, got fed up and decided to pay casslh with a $3 tip. I've seen this man tip $3 for someone serving him ice cream.
Terrible service, dry broiled food, and cramped quarters where you have to play Tetris in order to eat... I don't know how this place received 4 stars, but i rather eat...
Read moreThe best Sichuan restaurant around with multiple locations. They have a very authentic lunch menu. I love the twice cooked pork that is made with pork belly. Smokey hot chicken with cayenne is another favorite. Any dish with Napa cabbage and Spicy chili sauce is worth trying. Super nice owners and wait staff. If you get here at noon for lunch, there might be a wait.
Hot and Sour Wonton Soup (For 2) ($7.50). I expected this to be the normal H&S soup with wontons thrown in. It was not. A delicious broth that was really hot and sour filled with Wontons and Bok Choy. There was a good amount of wontons, but not as many as on my last visit. The first time I tried this, I was surprised at how good the broth was, not something I expected to like, but the balance was perfect. Don't miss this gem in the soup section.
Appetizer of Steamed Bacon with Fresh Garlic Sauce (9.95) which is a favorite of mine. They forgot the nice presentation this time. It's served warm, and yes, there is a big heap of garlic on top that you mix in with...
