"I'm going to start by saying that I usually don't post negative reviews, but I'm going to make an exception this time. From the moment we walked into Restaurant El Bohio in the famous seafood area of Puerto Rico, Joyudas, nobody paid us any attention or offered assistance to seat us. We walked out to the outdoor patio, where we were met by a server who looked at us and said, "What are you guys doing?" We replied, "Good evening, we're trying to eat." She looked at her watch and told us to sit in someone else's area and left. So, we sat down since my in-laws were starving and we were taking them out for dinner. We drive past this restaurant daily since we live down the road in El Complejo Deportivo de Cabo Rojo. We were only going to order food for my in-laws, an appetizer for me and my wife, since all we do during the day are food reviews and had already stopped at three restaurants prior to this one and weren't hungry.
We waited for 10 minutes before the server came out, left the utensils on the table, and walked away, not returning for another 10 minutes. We finally ordered the basic Mofongo with Fried Pork, which is a staple and one of our most basic plates in Puerto Rican cuisine. We also ordered a stuffed chicken breast with fried plantains and chorizo, which was covered in what I could only describe as the worst store-bought Alfredo sauce I've ever had. The dish also included frozen bag sweet plantains and something that didn't taste like chorizo, as well as store-bought Pana tostones. Both plates tasted terrible.
However, I must say that the fried Calamari was the best we've had on the island of Puerto Rico so far - super tender, super crispy with a pretty nice dipping sauce. At this point, even though the entrees were horrible, I wasn't going to write a review until they tried to give us a bill from another table. When we noticed, we asked why two plates and an appetizer were $115. They came up with the excuse, "Oh, I'm sorry, apparently we gave your bill of $71 to another table," which is super high for just two basic entrees and fried Calamari. It wasn't until we realized this that they said they couldn't print out a ticket showing our meal, but claimed it was $71. When I asked, he said the other ticket was $105, but the other table got our ticket and had already left since I was with my in-laws I didn't want to make a big scene so we just decided to not question the amounts pay the amount that they said and left which was a really big disappointment since they have the biggest outdoor patio and boat dock of all the restaurants in Joyudas and would have been perfect for our tours from...
Read moreVery nice restaurant, had the most amazing 'filete de chillo' in a 'salsa criolla' with tostones. So good I forgot to take pictures of the food! My son had shrimp stew and he ate the lot. He said it was the tastiest shrimp he's ever had! The staff were amazing, polite and very professional and you feel the wonderful Boricua hospitality the minute you step through the door. You get the choice of sitting indoors with air con or outside in the terrace over the sea. We chose the latter as it was early evening and the sun was starting to set. My son loved looking at the huge fish swimming next to the terrace (and feeding him any leftovers afterwards!). Watching the sunset with a passion fruit Mojito was just the cherry on top. This is a local restaurant and they specialise in traditional Puertorican food and seafood. I am not sure if the staff are bilingual but the menu was in both English and Spanish. Lots of seafood choices cooked to order in a variety of local flavours and sauces. Between the location, atmosphere, food choices, taste and quality, this is probably one of the nicest places I've eaten at here in Puerto Rico. Definitely and very highly recommended if you happen to be visiting Cabo Rojo or Boqueron as Joyuda (where the restaurant is) is only 15 minutes away from the Poblado de Boqueron. Also there is plenty of free parking across the road on a big lot. Just be careful when crossing the road as cars can come travelling quite fast! Pricewise, it depends on what you order but my dish was around $23 and some dishes are based on weight. My uncle ordered a whole 'chillo' which they brought to him raw first to look at and decide if he wanted to have that one or change it for another one. His was priced by weight but it was less than $30. Most fish in the menu is sourced locally as well and you can ask them what is local and what isn't. The staff were very happy to make...
Read moreI want to be fair. Today was Mother's Day. When we drove by the restaurant at 11 a.m. it was already packed and Patrons were waiting outside. My husband and I decided if we're going to eat at a reasonable time we should make our way there by 3 and if we're lucky we'll be seated by 4. we got there at 3 They sat us at 4:30 in the afternoon and took our order. they came back 45 minutes later to let us know they were out of the appetizers we ordered. We said to forget about it and we just asked for bread. quite some time after that which was a little over an hour, the food finally came out. The food we had was certainly not worth the over 3 hour wait. They were completely overwhelmed there was nowhere near the wait staff they needed. the few staff that was available were working at a snail's pace except for one guy he was hustling all over the place. When the bill came they actually charged the appetizers that we never had. That was an easy fix.they asked us if we wanted dessert but we didn't want to stay another 3 hours.it seemed as this could probably be a really good restaurant on a regular day. they are completely ill-prepared for high-volume patronage. I will return on a Tuesday or something to provide them with another opportunity. I'm thinking they've never experienced this type of volume before. There were many many people aggravated. Some of the wait staff was quite apologetic but the moment was ruined anyway. The patrons were joking with each other and making comments just to pass the time. We were actually sharing condiments from table to table because there weren't enough condiments. We got to talk to lots of people cause we had lots in common (aggrivation). Like I said I'll try it again on a super slow time. My compliments to the patrons who all kept their cool crying babies, hungry...
