If I could give half a star, I would. Here's my thoughts on Marita's.
When this was "The Sweet Potato Pie Co." on Bancroft, it was great, loved them even when they opened all the way in Hilltop. Still found my way to order from them. When we found them back on San Leandro under this name I was thrilled. Ordered from them a couple of times. Service seemed to go down, but the taste was still good.
Recently, I ordered a simple 2 layer German Chocolate Cake for the next day for my mother's birthday. They took my phone number, didn't give me a time or anything but it was a simple cake they always have so I wasn't questioning it.
When I arrived at the location, it was empty, two people were in the back, one was seated, the other moving around working. There was someone in the front who greeted me, and I picked out several slices of cake to take with me to another location. I informed her I was also picking up an order. She asked my phone number and she pulled the order from a board that had two other orders stuck to it. She looked down into the case where the cakes were on display, then walked to the back. She spoke to the lady who was moving around. The lady shrugged her shoulders as if she has no idea what the person helping me was talking about. The lady who was helping me proceeds to swirl some utensils in a bucket which appeared to have water in it. I was curious why she was doing that, I at first thought she was going to ice the cake, like they were still working on it. I later realized that wasn't the case, (she was stalling) I also wouldn't have wanted it because not once did she wash her hands.
So the lady who was helping me says, "We ran out of cake, we have a 1 layer available." I questioned her and said, "I called the order in yesterday, how did you run out?" She says, "We ran out today, but we have this one layer." I repeated what I said just so we were clear. "I ordered the cake yesterday, how did you run out today?"
I will pause here and say this, I understand mistakes happen, so had she said, they overlooked the order, mistakenly sold my cake, or forgot to make an extra for my order. I would have completely understood. It's crazy times, we are coming off the holidays, no worries. However, she insulted my intelligence with her next statement, along with the nonchalant attitude of not only her, but the lady who was working in the back, showed me that my business didn't matter to them, so I refuse to understand this behavior.
So the lady proceeds to tell me, "We got so busy yesterday, we were going to call you but we didn't have time." Remember I said when I pulled up, no one was in there. No one was even walking out. 2 of the 3 people were sitting doing what appears to be nothing, waiting on a customer or closing time. Also, she said they ran out the day I was coming to pick up, but that was the day after she just claimed she was going to call me. Unless she has some time machine, I have no idea how she was going to call me, the day I ordered, to tell me they ran out of the cake the next day.
So with that being said, I had no cake for my mother for her birthday from one of her favorite bakeries. I will no longer be supporting this company. My mother will not be supporting this company, and several of my friends will not be supporting this company either.
I hope you all have a better experience than I had. It was the...
Read moreIf you could earn stars for product appearance this would have 5. Unfortunately the taste adds to your stars so I have to give this bakery 2 stars. I ordered 4 cake slices various flavors and 2 pecan mini pies. The young girl working was really nice and helpful. The older lady was nice as well. Prices are okay a slice of cake is $4 and the mini pies are also. The next size up is $6 and the cupcakes $5. They had lots of options seems like every flavor you can think of they had and it all looked so good. And there was whole cakes and regular pies for different prices. We were super juiced to eat our goodies only to be disappointed by the taste. The pecan pie looked the part but tasted like pure sugar. It didn't have the traditional nutty, maple like flavors you get when you eat pecan pies. Each bite I was crunching on sugar grains as if the sugar wasn't melted down completely. I only ate half. My lemon cake lacked LEMON. It was moist but flavorless even the icing wasn't good. I didn't taste anything but cake flour no butter, vanilla, lemon, nothing. I didn't finish eating it. My family members weren't happy with their's either same issue. I wanted to have an awesome experience since I love homemade goodies and they had a large good looking selection but no luck. I'll pass on stopping here again and go to another...
Read moreNo idea how a place has such polarizing reviews and experiences. I think I've had the banana pudding but Isn't it just nilla wafewrs and pudding? Right now, though, I'm eating the most disgusting peach cobbler I've ever even heard of. I would not be surprised if they said they poured sprite in here as an ingredient. I can't even just pick out the peaches and try those.
But... why did they have good reviews at the resteraunt I bought it from? Like someone said this was good. There are these burnt brown pieces I can't even have on my tongue. Worst part? I don't waste food! I have a food disorder that means I get extremely uncomfortable at the idea of rejecting or wasting food, I usually have to ask my boyfriend to toss things for me or I'll tell him to 'eat it' and he'll just toss it when I step away.
And I'm about to throw this whole thing away it's inedible! It sounds like theres an issue when you send out the refrigerated desserts, maybe? Just remember that those places still have your label on it so if they're doing something wrong or instructing people wrong? Or, honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if this was expired? I got it at...
