D & K Soul Food — Restaurant in Calumet Township

I went here for the first time hoping to find a place in Gary with some healthy options which they did have but the portions were very skimpy and not like on the menu the egg rolls were Extremely GREASY to the point the paper bag was soaked and it even soaked the other paper bags it was so greasy that after eating one I got a major headache would not recommend. Non the less the egg rolls were large. The rice was very bland no seasoning no flavor at all, the macaroni was nice not a strong flavor but it was nice wasn't watery and was pretty good. The jerk chicken was ok it didn't taste much like jerk chicken and the portion was very small I have about 6 little pieces sprinkled around the bowl so that was very disappointing especially for almost 12$ but I do try and support our black owned business, last the peach cobbler was very good and it was the only thing I can say I had no problem with , it definitely tasted home made. I would recommend larger portions and also not so greasy food, and maybe a little seasoning unless none requested otherwise. With this being my first time and not having the best experience would I go back yes but it will be a while for sure. Also this is my 3rd time actually try to try there food and patronize there business on the days they claim to be open and was in fact closed . I would still try it out but maybe get something other then...

I recently ordered a smothered pork chop and my sides was (2) rice with gravy. Everything looked great until you taste the rice. The rice was soft over cooked and had a smell to it. I thought I was wrong but just so happened my mail person came by to drop off a package. I asked her about the rice and she smelled it too. We both said that rice was old. I called and asked to speak to the manager and gentlemen got on the phone n I explained to him my concerns and he put me on hold and after a couple of minutes a female got on the phone and again I explained to her my concerns about the rice. She first said the rice was steam and maybe it was steam too long and the smell was butter. She said she went to the pot to smelled the rice and the smell I smelling was butter. Really my butter DO NOT smell like that. I told her that smell I'm smelling and tasting is not butter. For it to be so soft n smell that way.......it was old rice.

Be aware ordering rice from here because they will say the smell is butter and the rice is soft I guess it's ok since it is supposed to...

First time visiting D&K Soul Food and it was delicious! We got Grilled Chicken Caesar Wrap Romaine lettuce, roasted garlic, carrots, Parmesan cheese and Caesar dressing and a Jerk Chicken Wrap Romaine lettuce, roasted peppers, carrots, cheddar cheese, Jerk chicken and Jerk ranch dressing both came with chips. We also ordered 4 Wings chicken only and a bottle of OBAMA sweet tea. Both wraps were bursting with flavor and lots of chicken, sauces and veggies! Jerk had some spice to it but not too overly hot but I'm sure if you want it really hot that can be accomplished. The Caesar was a true Caesar salad in a wrap! Their meats are very well seasoned and not overly salty. I would prefer the wrap wrapped tighter so all the goodness doesn't fall out . We tried the wings and they were good and fresh . No need to add anything on top because the breading was nicely seasoned! The wings were small which was my only issue🥴😜.lol The sweet tea was banging but definitely not an everyday drink . We will be going back and trying the fish and more !...
