Learned about this small restaurant from a U.P. local in Houghton, Mi. They raved about the pasties, so my hubby and I had to check it out. As is common, the town of Laurium is just on the other side of the road from Calumet. We saw this commonly throughout the Keweenaw Peninsula. Everybody wanted their "own" town, so they would create one across the street from each other.
Anyway, the place is cute and smells delicious, but we were disappointed with the pasties. Too much onion for our taste. The crust was nice and light, and the pasty tasted good, but I kept burping onions all day long! I spoke to some locals who said they had the same experience. So, if you really like onions, this is the place to eat your pasties.
We found two other U.P. places where the pasties were better in our opinion, and we didn't burp onions all day long.
Also, the cookies weren't that good either. Bland. We found another place called "The Wood n' Spoon that had much better cookies. Delicious, and just up the road from Tony's - south of Mohawk, Mi.
Sorry Tony, but we just couldn't give you a...
Read moreI lived in the keweenaw most of my life and for as long as I can remember Toni's was always one of the "must go" places for breakfast, pasties and baked goods. Not just for me, pretty much everybody agreed. Toni's was a local legend going back decades.
However, over the past few years there has been a very sharp and noticeable decline. The food quality is just... bad. Anything griddle cooked tastes like it was made with oil that was expired and everything else seems like it was made with possibly cheaper ingredients. It's just bland. Also, the past 2 times I've gone there hasn't been any cookies for sale in the case, like they weren't even being made anymore. Wth?
I could maybe dismiss this as my memory of things just being wrong, but I've talked to a handful of other local friends and everyone is in agreement... Whoever has been running the place is running it straight into the grave and people are starting to stay away. Wake up and do better before we lose a local fixture.
Prices are still...
Read moreConsistently one of the best diners in the area. What it lacks in dining space it more than makes up for in service, food quality, and crazy low prices. I spent less than $11 for my meal and I got a whole breakfast; 3 eggs, 2 bacon, 2 sausage, a chunk of ham, 4 pieces of toast, and a helping of fried potatoes. And that was even with a drink!
The food also tastes phenomenal. I've never had a bad experience. It's all cooked perfectly to order. And the service is fantastic. The ladies are all super nice and courteous. And the owner is a great guy. He'll often come talk to people and always has some great stories or something to share.
The place is in a quiet spot and looks super unassuming. But don't let that fool you. Give this place a shot and you won't be disappointed. They have options for everyone so you'll get the amount of food that you need at super low prices compared to any other place in the area. Also, they only accept cash or checks. So make sure to have...
