San Simeon Beach Bar & Grill is part of the main lobby building to the San Simeon Lodge. If you're researching like I did for a trip you've no doubt seen, there are not a lot of choices to stay/eat in this small area. We basically ended up at the restaurant because neither of us wanted to make the effort to venture out from where we were. We weren't particularly hungry, having stopped in another town and had a nice large meal - but we both knew we needed to eat just a little something.
Let me give you an analogy - in a one stoplight town, the only gas station is there and knows for MILES around they are the only option. They inevitably charge LOTS more. This restaurant is one of those places. Yes, there are other options, but they are about the same in fare and pricing. Some even higher priced, so we just walked here from our room.
The restaurant is not pretty. It's a mix of 70s, 80s, 90s carpeted diner decor (reminded me of a hotel conference room). It definitely has an identity crisis (small peek into the bar area, very typical old dark neighborhood bar look). This doesn't help you when you sit and see the pricing on the fairly standard american diner/bar type food. I think we both lost our appetites a bit. We decided to split a 12" sausage pizza (which I believe was $26 and change - almost as expensive as a well-known Round Table pizza. We made jokes about an overpriced frozen pizza while we waited, BUT what I can say is that the pizza was well over 12" (maybe 14"), had decent thinner crust, real cheese, decent sauce and plenty of sausage. We split the pizza, ate it all, and we were reasonably full. So while very overpriced, we were glad we only got one and was good enough for 2 people and not bad at all. So the value was there for us since we didn't drop as much money as others who have been critical here.
*The two ladies who were working that helped us in the near empty dining room were very nice women and...
Read moreThis place is a scam! Came here at around noon on Saturday, November 26th and my parents ordered some wine, while I asked for a cocktail list since the bar was full of people watching the FIFA game. My parents were served the wrong wine, and I was told that there was NO BARTENDER available in the restaurant or bar. This place literally has "Bar and Grill" in the name, but has no bartender and thus no cocktails, just overpriced beer and overpriced wine.
$17.95 for an appetizer quesadilla. $17.95 for fish and chips. $13.95 for a "Veggie Burger". $26.95 for a 12 inch Hawaiian or Sausage pizza. This place has stirred my inner Jew and I am enraged by the high high prices for mediocre service and food. I only ordered to not embarrass my parents, but if I had the choice of going hungry for the day or eating at this place, I'd choose to go hungry.
Fish and chips weren't bad but weren't great either, probably a 5-6/10. Should've been $12, but instead it was just about $18. Final price for our LIGHT meal of two glasses of wine, two fish and chips and one shrimp and chips, was $75 without tip!!!
Service was mediocre and despite not even being at half capacity, this "Bar and Grill" was less appealing than a Denny's and more costly than a quality steakhouse. No thank you, never again! Avoid this place and go somewhere else; save your time, your money and...
Read moreThis restaurant has its ups and downs… I have never been here before I’m out this way for a mini vacation and decided to stop in for dinner. I ordered the Calamari for an appetizer, it was so rubbery and hard to chew. I ordered a pizza which was a $27 12” pizza the dough was good the sauce was subpar at best. The cheese and toppings slid off so easily it made it very unappetizing, (PSA: the cheese and ingredients should be gripping the dough when properly cooked) it was so greasy and I suspect the sauce was watered down (which explains the blandness). Now on to their saving grace, I ordered the mozzarella sticks they were very good and appetizing. On to the service. My server was very polite but very forgetful, so that could be worked on. It took getting another waiter to get a refill and didn’t get the dessert menu until asking the third time. The restaurant has great potential to continue but seems that they are only relying on the fact that there is not many options to eat at other places for visitors, unless of course visitors opt to drive 30 to 50 minutes away in order to get something to eat which I did the following day. All in all it’s an over priced restaurant that doesn’t have you leaving feeling as though you were served your money’s worth. Quite...
