I have just returned, still faintly shimmering with the afterglow, from an evening at the venerable Peter Shields Inn in Cape May, an experience so utterly enchanting that mere words feel like clumsy pebbles attempting to capture the brilliance of a thousand suns!
But let me begin, shall I? As I stepped across the threshold, the very air seemed to hum with a refined elegance, a gentle murmur of sophistication that whispered of evenings steeped in history and graced by the most discerning of palates. And then, my ears were blessed by a melody, a cascade of notes that danced and pirouetted through the air like ethereal sprites. It was the pianist, you see, a veritable maestro of the ivories! His fingers, those nimble navigators of sonic landscapes, traversed the keyboard with such grace and passion that I swear the very chandeliers above seemed to sway in time with the rhythm. Each chord was a revelation, each run a breathtaking vista of musical artistry. It was as if Chopin himself had returned, his spirit channeled through this magnificent soul, serenading us with the very music of the spheres! I found myself utterly transported, lost in a sublime reverie where worries dissolved like seafoam on the morning tide.
And then, ah, then there was him. Our waiter. But to call him merely a "waiter" is akin to labeling the Mona Lisa a mere "painting"! This, my friend, was a gentleman of unparalleled charm and wit, a veritable ambassador of hospitality! And the twinkle in his eye? It sparkled with a mischievous intelligence that hinted at depths of knowledge both culinary and… well, let's just say sporting. For upon the slightest of inquiries, a mere whisper of a certain Merseyside football club, his face lit up like the Fourth of July! Yes, a fellow supporter of the mighty Liverpool! Our shared allegiance forged an instant bond, a camaraderie that transcended the mere act of ordering dinner. He regaled us with tales of glorious victories, his voice infused with the passionate fervor of the Kop itself! Each dish he presented was not just a plate of expertly crafted food, but a carefully curated masterpiece, delivered with a flourish and a commentary that was both informative and utterly delightful. He anticipated our every need before the thought even fully formed in our minds! It was as if he possessed a sixth sense, a telepathic connection to our gastronomic desires!
The food itself? Oh, my dear friend, it was a symphony for the taste buds! Each ingredient sang its own vibrant note, harmonizing in a crescendo of flavor that left me utterly speechless. But the true magic of the evening, the unforgettable essence that will linger in my memory for eons to come, was the seamless ballet between the enchanting melodies of the pianist and the utterly captivating service of our Liverpool-loving guide. They were the twin stars of a truly celestial experience, the Jupiter and Venus of an evening that transcended the ordinary and soared into the realms of the truly extraordinary!
Go, my friend, go to the Peter Shields Inn! Allow yourself to be swept away by the magic, to be serenaded by the keys, and to be served by a man whose passion for both fine dining and the Reds is as infectious as it is utterly charming. You will not merely have dinner; you will embark on a journey for the senses, a delightful escapade that will leave you utterly, irrevocably, and wonderfully enchanted! Believe me, it is an experience that deserves not just five stars, but the entire...
Read moreThis is a gorgeous ocean-side mansion that has been converted into a B&B. There are nine total rooms for couples to enjoy. This place is very pricey, but considering the luxury offered the price makes sense. The receptionists are all extremely friendly and accommodating. They leave at 10 PM, however, and lock the front door. After 10 you must use a side entrance that you are given the key for.
All of the rooms have a unique feature of their own (one has a jacuzzi tub, one with a couple's shower, one with a private balcony, etc.) All rooms have AC/heat that can be set to your preferences. A moderately sized flat screen TV is also available for use. My boyfriend and I brought our laptop and an HDMI cable to watch Netflix late at night before bed. A nightly turn-down service is also offered between 6PM and 8PM.
Every morning you are served breakfast, which you reserve a time for at the front desk the day before. The breakfast is excellent, I recommend the pancakes. In the afternoons wine and cheese is served downstairs. Beach towels, beach chairs, umbrellas, and bicycles are available for guests free of charge.
If you go to one of the many fantastic wineries in the area, you can bring back wine and ask the receptionist to put it on ice for you. They will either serve it to you in your room, or hang on to it to be enjoyed at dinner if you choose to dine at the restaurant.
I recommend making a reservation at the in-house restaurant. The food is excellent and high-end. The atmosphere of the restaurant is classy, elegant, and very relaxed. The menu is expensive, but the food is portioned generously. They also have a prix fixe menu. It's a three course meal for each person that includes one appetizer, one entree, and one dessert. You can choose from any of the menu options, and there is only an upcharge for the filet mignon. I recommend the garlic soup and any of their fish entrees. The restaurant specializes in seafood.
My only "complaint" was a cute little pigeon decided he wanted to nest right outside of our window. So around 5 AM, my boyfriend and I were woken up to a strange "cooing" and "prurroooring" sound.
This was my first stay at a B&B, and I think my boyfriend went all out and spoiled any other B&B for me. Staying here made me feel like a princess. It was such a great experience, and so different from the feel of...
Read moreWe had a reservation but had to wait 20+ minutes for our table. Apparently another table spilled water and they moved them to our table and had to clean up and reset their original table for us. Which was fine, but they directed us to wait outside (which was too chilly - no heat lamps), and said they'd send the bar tender out to take our drink order. It took almost 10 minutes before he came out to take our order, and then another 10 for the drinks to arrive (all out in the chill). When he came back we asked if there was a warmer place to wait...he directed us to the lounge in the basement. The AC was on and it was about the same cold temp as outside. Luckily, our table was ready shortly after we moved to the lounge. What was the most annoying part of this, was that the bartender dropped off a check. If you're running late and send out the bartender to appease us while we wait, then the drink bill should be transferred over to the table. We shouldn't have to pay two separate checks. (Ps...no discount/free drink/free app/etc offered for the inconvenience)
The drinks were top notch - they clearly have a mixologist on staff. The appetizers outshined the mains by far. The crab special app and burrata were exquisite. The mains were yummy but not unique and overpriced for the quality. The service was ok, but not up to the price tag - lots of dropped utensils when clearing (likely due to it being the opening weekend of the season with new staff, but again, for the price tag, expected better.)
Again, it was yummy, but expected much more for the price. I don't think...
