This is kinda been my secret backup sushi spot. I’ve been getting burned recently by places closer to my house with long waits, boring rolls or bland ingredients in otherwise good ideas.
A few reasons why it’s not my first choice is that in order to wash away other sushi experiences I tend to go for a higher priced option relying the overall experience to find neutrality. I also don’t’ like coming here because of the parking. It’s bad, even when all the other business are closed, there is still Souplantation taking up 90% of all the taken spots. I get it, but I’d just as easily go to Albertos behind this place.
I love the sushi chefs. I love the banter they have between them and the kitchen. It reminds me of when I worked food service. I like how they speak some Japanese phrases with a Mexican accent. I like ordering I Spanish (what little I can speak). The service is great from all the staff though. The décor is pretty basic, a little dated. The prices are very affordable, downright cheap.
The last 2 times I asked for Ikura and quail eggs they gave me masago and then tobiko, but no ikura, which really makes that item sing. I love their handrolls, you can taste the hint of roast, they certainly pack them and for many items hand mix the sauces (90% of places batch their spicy tuna). They remember how spicy I like things and are generous with additional heat.
Their rolls are not sloppy, they don’t fall apart at the seam and you can taste the vinegar they use in their rice. They don’t overload things with asparagus (which frankly in a roll is gross imo), gobi, or other fillers. I mean yes cucumber is standard, but some places throw in all kinds of stuff to cut down on fish, like tons of rice even. Things are pretty proportionate here. I love getting their food to go too, though I haven’t tried their non sushi items and I’ve never not sat at the bar.
It’s worth a check out for people less interested in fried rolls, fillers, overpriced bland items. Sort of that...
Read moreMy husband and I used Grubhub to order Sushi and some other combination dishes from this restaurant. I am pretty sure that my husbands orange chicken wasn’t even chicken, more like a small mammal if anything. It was very greasy and gamey tasting. I ordered fried calamari which literally looked, and tasted, like I was eating folded and fried plastic wrap with tempura crust on it. It had zero taste, and was prepared incorrectly. I had a black hair in my rice, which I found after taking several bites, and both my husband and I have blonde hair. To top it off, instead of having a little cup of soy sauce or teriyaki sauce, there was a cup of cheap tasting BBQ sauce. Why would they even have that sauce on hand? The sushi roll we got was a Las Vegas roll and was supposed to be topped with eel sauce, I used to live in japan and I can tell you right now that was not eel sauce, it looked more like diarrhea and tasted foul. The roll was soggy and after eating two pieces I immediately started to feel nauseous and just stopped eating all of my food. Even the salad was gross and slimy. The food from this place wasn’t even tolerable, so we ended up throwing away all of the food after just a few bites each, and it was $50 for the two of us. They also only sent one set of chopsticks, even though I very obviously ordered two entrees and then some sides. If I could give this place 0 stars I would. Do yourselves a favor and go to literally any other restaurant in Oceanside to eat, for you and your...
Read moreSushi was ok. Service wasn't good. Didn't know who our server really was since three different people took different orders for us. When it came time to order our rolls they brought out my daughters first and then after waiting 10 min I had to gently flag down one of the servers that helped us and asked if my roll would be out shortly. She said yes. So after 15 mins and my daughter was almost finished with her roll, my roll came out, but not how I ordered it. I just said that I didn't care for it and sent it back. I asked why there was a 15-minute delay and having my order come out versus when my daughters role came out and she said oh they're really busy back there and I looked around and there really was only maybe 10 or 12 people in the restaurant. I also told her that when two people order roles they should come out at the same time not staggered especially not that length of time. This was our first time there and I was hoping we found a good place but I doubt we will return unfortunately. The server girl was so casual and nonchalant as though this is an everyday occurrence, I don't know if it is but I don't want to have to deal with it especially when I come in hungry and looking forward to eating sushi and everything just seems to be...
