Have been searching for a Chinese place that does the NJ/NY style like I grew up with or even some that is actually good, so after reading the reviews especially the one that said the owners were from NY we made the 2 & 1/2hr drive one way to try it. The restaurant seems new, clean but very small. The girl working the counter was nice but definitely not knowledgeable on the dishes. It was so busy so I had high hopes the food would be good even if it wasn’t the style i was searching for but it was absolutely disgusting! My husband & I ended up throwing all of it away after 2 bites. Most definitely not the style we were looking for & most definitely the worst we have had trying to find it. Idk what was in the egg roll but the inside was bright red. Not just specks of bright red like maybe from the tips of roasted pork but mostly red. Like they dyed the bland cabbage red. The taste was so bland & stale. I ordered the sesame chicken dinner with fried rice. The chicken was swimming in this florescent red water that had absolutely no taste, so gross & the fried rice seemed like they made mushy white rice, thew a couple dashes of soy sauce on it & threw 2 peas, a piece of carrot & several fatty pieces of pork in it then reheated it in the microwave. My husband got the beef with broccoli dinner thinking it was a safe choice along with the crab rangoons. They were both terrible. Everything was so bland & the beef was so chewy. Again, like it was microwaved. We were so disappointed. I really don’t understand how anyone could eat here. Thankfully we found a different place 20 mins from here that was absolutely amazing! Bean Sprouts Chinese was definitely the NJ/NY style i grew up with! Everything was actually seasoned & made correctly. No bright red tasteless water on the sesame chicken the actual correct, thick, flavorful sauce & correctly made fried rice that was heated in a wok with lots onions, peas, carrots & bean sprouts like it’s supposed to be! So delicious! My husband got the beef again & it was so tender, & flavorful! They even have the real deal fortune cookies that are the actual orange cookies! Not the synthetic, bland ones that everyone else around seems to have that have absolutely no taste. Altho I don’t know about the cookies here at Fangs since we were not given any. Anyway so glad our 2 & 1/2hr each way drive wasn’t wasted like our money was here. We now have a delicious new restaurant on our list. Shout Out to Bean Sprouts for...
Read moreI've been coming to this place now and then since they opened this restaurant because it's close to my house. This is not the one of best szechuan restaurants although I have not found one in NC yet like ones in CA or NY. However, better than or similar to szechuan garden or chengdu 7 in my opinion.
I only had limited number of dishes so far, but here are what I recommend and not recommend:
Not recommend General Tso's chicken, it is not typical general tso dish. They use ketchup or tomato based sauce and not spicy at all. Also wish they cut the meat into smaller pieces.
Kungpao chicken, same reason above
Beef string bean with garlic sauce, expected clean garlic based sauce, but it had the same flavor of General Tso. Disappointed.
Lo Mein or Chow Fun, any noodle based dish, they way overcook noodles, so noodles become too mushy and stuck together (see photo)
Any fried rice, just not good.
Mushu (Pork) - Super sweet and very little meat, mostly cabbage, wish they use shredded fresh cooked pork, not precooked dry bbq pork (see photo)
Recommend Chongqing diced chicken, not the best I've had but pretty good, it is fried (see photo)
Salt and pepper spare rib, good but it is also fried (see photo)
I will update my review if I...
Read moreKung Pao chicken lunch - well prepared dish, a bit spicy for me (for some that may be an upside). Nice presentation, I would have preferred a bit more flavor. Sesame chicken dinner - fresh crispy broccoli was good, huge serving of chicken, flavor was decent.. Despite the huge serving of chicken, there was not much rice or broccoli, I would prefer to have more rice and vegetables and less chicken. I thought the sauce was a bit heavy. Pork fried dumpling - delicious! Highly recommend them. The dipping sauce tasted like straight soy sauce, so that was disappointing. I know this is a new restaurant - they keep it immaculately clean, the service people at the desk are very friendly and helpful. Very nice place to go, with some slight adjustments I would think it would go from 3.5 to 4 stars (3.5 stars wasn't a choice). I will definitely go back - they have a large selection of dishes, and I would like to see Fang's Kitchen be...
