Ono Hawaiian BBQ — Restaurant in Castro Valley

Came here with a coupon for a half-priced lunch plate. I ordered the "fire chicken lunch plate" with a drink (as per the coupon). It came with two-scoops of steamed rice and one-scoop of macaroni salad. Great amount of food for the couponed-price but not as good a value without the coupon (price was just under $11, with tax). $7.00 more, without the coupon. Food was excellent, as the fire chicken was mildly hot and spicy. The bed of veggies (broccoli and cabbage) was fresh/crunchy. Mac salad was good and the steamed rice was perfectly made. The iced-tea was from a spigot-mix and was awful. The spigot it came out of dispensed more water than tea (so, the IT tasted more like water and less like tea). Cashier was indifferent but courteous. The eating area felt more like a cafeteria but I think they are going for that indoor "Hawaiian feel" (they had outdoor seats too). Pricey choice for CV but food was...

Miss Hawaiian plate lunch? This is a great substitute. It’s not exactly the plate lunch you can find in Kauai or Oahu, but it fills that “itch” when you miss onolicious food. The meats need to be grilled long (grill marks). Mac salad hits the spot. The size of the rice scoops could be a little larger.

Order the Hawaiian BBQ Mix plate (kalbi, beef and chicken teriyaki) or the Seafood Mix Combo (panko deep fried white fish and large size shrimp and chicken teriyaki) with two scoops of rice and Mac salad scoop. Either will satisfy your hungry appetite.

There's multiple issues with this restaurant. First, the food tasted way too salty and rich (poor sauce mixture), the chicken in the fire chicken was low quality fatty pieces and they have a tiny asterisk that says the calories are for the protein only, which makes the customer think they are consuming less than half of the calories actually in the meal which is harmful to those aiming to live a healthy lifestyle. Finally, I asked the cashier if the Hawaiian BBQ chicken was good and she said she had no idea and had never tried it despite working at a Hawaiian BBQ place. I'm out $35 for two gross and...
