If you're looking for some delicious, southern-style comfort food in Castro Valley, look no further than Southern Comfort Kitchen. From the first time I tried their food truck, I was hooked, so when I heard they were opening up a restaurant nearby, I was absolutely ecstatic. This restaurant serves up the best food in the area, and for good reason!
The staff is always friendly and efficient. Beat the line by ordering ahead on their website. What really sets this restaurant apart is the food. Every dish is unique, fresh, and bursting with flavor. And their sauces! Oh my, their sauces! You’ll notice the names of sauces used in some of their menu items. In case some of the sauces are unfamiliar, here’s a quick cheat sheet to the profiles of the sauce flavors used in some of their menu items: “Who Dat” sauce has a sweet creamy flavor that is expertly balanced with a medium level of spiciness. “Lil’ Wheezy” on the other hand has a tangy, buttery flavor with a spicy kick that builds as you eat. The “Remoulade” is a tangy, creamy sauce that has a mild hint of spice. Every one of them will tantalize your taste buds.
As for the menu items themselves, there are so many amazing options to choose from. Personally, I can't get enough of the Lil' Wheezy Shrimp Po Boy and Crab Fries. My other favorites are the Cajun Fries, Who Dat Chicken Strips, and Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich. Let’s not forget about the desserts. And I mean all of them are a must try - the Carrot Cake (without nuts, just the way I like it), Beignets (a special treat only available on Sundays), and Bread Pudding (caramelized/crunchy on the outside, gooey on the inside, served fresh and warm, and smothered in a rich whiskey sauce). Pure heaven!
In short, Southern Comfort Kitchen is an amazing restaurant that is not to be missed. Although it may be difficult to believe, I have no affiliation with the restaurant whatsoever (I swear). I'm simply a food enthusiast who is passionate about great cuisine. Whether you're a die-hard fan of Southern cuisine or you're just looking for something new and exciting to try, this restaurant has...
Read moreThe food was good. However, the customer service left a bad taste in our mouths. The restaurant is really small and tight. We arrived around the time it opened and dined-in. We had our children with us, one being in a high chair at the head of the table. We were sitting at one of the largest tables available in the restaurant that is right across from the register. We had been sitting for more than over an hour and was finishing up our meal when a lady comes out of nowhere; she may have been the manager or owner, not sure. By this time it was getting pretty busy and not a lot of walking space to the register. But she proceeds to go in on us about how “this isn’t going to work”. Referring to where our daughter was sitting in the high chair. She continues that this isn’t going to work, it’s a fire hazard, if the fire station came they’d get shut down, good thing we are almost done because this isn’t going to work. She made us now feel rushed, uncomfortable and like we were now a nuisance. I’m sorry we were trying to support your business and make the best out of the seating options, it’s not our fault the restaurant is small as hell. Now, I am not upset about the point she was trying to make, I completely understood that. However, it was the way it was said to us. 1. We are paying customers. 2. We are paying customers. We are not your children or any one else that needs to be reprimanded. Everything she said would have been well received if she would have said it to us in a professional and respectable manner. Instead of coming out of nowhere and telling us our seating arrangement isn’t going to work. I definitely will not be going back there anytime soon. It’s not really kid friendly if you have more than 1 or 2. Again, the food was good but I believe that customer service is just as important, especially when it’s coming from someone in a higher position. I was very...
Read moreWith a high online ratings and recommendations, we decided to try this place for an early dinner today. We ordered online three entrees for pick up...blackened shrimp over grits, fried catfish and shrimp with Cajun fries, and a full seafood gumbo. From the time I ordered (2:55 p.m.), to the time it was ready for pickup (4:15 p.m.) was just over 1.25 hours. The subtotal was $46.
Not sure why it took this long to prepare my order, plus it was in the late afternoon! By the time I got home, every thing was warm, and the fried items were luke warm.
Before leaving the store, I checked my items and confirmed there were 3 items in the bag. However, the seafood gumbo over rice @ $14.50 was in a small plastic container, therefore, I wanted to double check with one of the staff members that it was not a side order. They confirmed the size was a full sized order! 😳 Not much seafood after poured over all that rice. Flavor was just OK, I've definitely had much better.
The fried shrimp and catfish with Cajun fries @ $15.75 was a sad bunch. There were only 4 little shrimp and 2 slivers of catfish, but plenty of fries. The shrimp were dry, and I've never seen Canjun catfish so small! The shrimp and catfish were a seasoned with a cornmeal batter, nothing special.
Blackened shrimp over grits @ $15.75 was also small in size with 7 small shrimp. Taste of shrimp was again just OK.
Overall, I was disappointed and sadly will...
