I was driving back to the Bronx from a road trip to Ohio and decided to stop in Pennsylvania for lunch. I pulled off Route 80 and found myself in the tiny town of Catawissa. I just wanted to eat, litterally anything would have sufficed. But that's when I saw the trains and remembered I had seen them before long ago on Google Maps while I had been doing research on small towns in PA. Now I had discovered the location in real life just as randomly as I had found it online. I remembered from my previous research that it was a latin resturant with very good reviews. My curiosity was peaked. I had to know how a latin resturant flanked by antique trains came to exist in a tiny town in PA. To make an already long story short the food was amazing, better than the food we have in the Bronx, and thats saying something. It must be all the local farm grown produce they have access to. It was alot of food and very affordable, if every resturant in the USA was like this nobody would ever complain about anything. The staff were all very kind and accommodating. They gave me so much food for lunch that I had enough left over for dinner. Then there were the trains. They told me the whole story of how and why they decided to start a resturnat here, and how and why it is built out of an old railroad building flanked by old steam trains. Come for the food and then stay for the trains. Great photo opportunities. The 150 year old steam locomotive parked in the front is amazing and much bigger in real life than it looks like online. So whether you live nearby or are on a road trip passing through be sure to visit this unique little resturant and the family who operate it. Five...
Read moreRun to this hidden gem! I took my kids out for dinner on Valentines Day and the Caballo Dorado family surprised us. Started with some queso steak fries, the kids got a chicken quesadilla and I got the fajita special. The main dinners were excellent and even got a picky 8 yr old to try the rice and beans. They had a piano duet taking requests and entertaining the crowd. It was decorated for the holiday and had a spot to take pics with your family. My son made a new friend and they brought out chocolate covered strawberries for us with the check. We didn’t skip dessert though ….We got churros and flan to go. My daughter proclaimed this was her first churro, dipped it in the chocolate sauce and by the second bite she said hallelujah and had her eyes closed with her hand raised up like she was in the third row at church receiving the gospel. I had to try the flan and knew from her reaction I was eating it all….yup. I couldn’t stop myself from saying oh my after the first bite. Catawissa is kind of a drive through town, now it’s time to turn off the Main Street and share a meal. BYOB and your appetite to this establishment as...
Read moreMy wife and I both had the huevos rancheros this afternoon and we really enjoyed them. The beans were good, not to watery and not too thick, but just right. The rice was nice and fluffy, just the way I prefer it most of the time. The seasoning matched the occasion and didn't overpower the plate. The eggs were cooked over medium and the chili it was smoothered with was good, not spicy and was mild in flavor. I also asked for a side of salsa Verde and was grateful that it tasted just the way i was hoping it would. I haven't had a home style meal at a mexican restaurant in a while. This region doesn't have the best options for mexican as a city would, so this place is my new go to for authentic mexican food for whenever I'm in the mood. We'll for sure...
