The Beaumont, is a casual Catonsville steak house, one of several restaurants owned by Evan Brown. It was a Saturday evening, our first time dining there for my guest and I and the restaurant was not full. It’s fairly small, seating approximately 60 diners. The ambience is created by lining the walls with some impressive paintings done by Andrew Brown, a former Catonsville resident. There are few soft surfaces and the floors are not carpeted, so it became fairly noisy as the restaurant filled.
The server did a very good job and was very pleasant and even enthusiastic about the food when speaking to me and my guest. He was attentive but not overly so. He did forget a timing request for serving the meals but it was a small mistake.
The menu is not extensive but there are a good variety of choices, including what I assume are well cooked steaks. I didn’t choose the steaks because I felt cooking a steak to order was not a great challenge and the entrees such as simply broiled scallops and baked chicken were not very imaginative. Instead I decided to have several appetizers and the Beaumont salad. My guest selected the crab stuffed flounder served on saffron rice
When the flounder was served, it looked like a pile of sauce with the flounder not visible and the saffron rice missing. The asparagus that was included was unfortunately untrimmed leaving trimming of the fibrous ends to the customer.
The salad with candied bacon pieces had a nice honey mustard dressing that didn't overwhelm the greens and tasty cherry tomatoes. The candied bacon pieces were the perfect choice and actually made the salad memorable. I ordered the fried lobster tail, the P.E.I. mussels and the crispy grits and shrimp. The lobster was tender and well cooked but the flavor was masked by too much breading. The mussels were sweet and tasty but I’ll talk about the broth in a minute. I thought the shrimp and grits was maybe a too elaborate take on the simple low country dish. The three large shrimp were well cooked. I can’t tell you anything about the flavor of the cheese grits or the shrimp because the toppings of red peppers and tomatoes and ham(?) overwhelmed them.
This is the really disappointing part: Both my guest and I found the saltiness of our selections to be so excessive, it ruined the flavors and made the dishes almost inedible. FYI, neither my guest nor I have high blood pressure and we use salt on our food. I think the broth with the mussels was good with a nice taste of the sea.I say think because it was so salty, I could barely dip my bread into it and could only eat the mussels.
I’ve saved the best for last, the ice cream sundae. The crunchy, toasted pound cake croutons, and the cherry liquor with liquor soaked cherries made it a desert worth returning for. I can’t remember having eaten a better sundae, even better than Marconi’s if you are old enough to remember.
Full disclosure: Although he didn’t know I was coming, I have known Evan Brown since he was a kid and I know he takes pride in the restaurants he owns and the food they serve. Maybe this one needs a little closer supervision? I may try the Beaumont again but I’ll order an appetizer for two and check the salt level before ordering more. I really want that ice cream sundae!
The meal for two without drinks or tip was $132. Had the food been better prepared that would have been...
Read moreMy husband posted our review on open table and the restaurants website but I feel it belongs here too. We were originally not going to leave one but when I spent the night fighting for my life on the toilet after dining here a review just seems warranted.
On New Year's Eve, my wife and I wanted to celebrate our anniversary at this highly recommended restaurant. We submitted a reservation through OpenTable for 830pm explaining that it was our anniversary, which was accepted. We arrive at the restaurant right at 830 for our special dinner. The entrance to The Beaumont was a little cluttered upon our arrival as the Manager was collecting names of newly arrived guests (ours and a couple in front of us) to sort out the seating. As this was happening, another couple entered the restaurant. To make room and be considerate, my wife and I stepped aside, which allowed them to speak with the hostess. My wife and I continue chatting and waiting for our table, when the hostess sits the couple that arrived after us in our seat. There was no communication between the manager and the host, which caused us to miss out on our table. They recommended we take a seat at the bar to wait for a table to become available. This was disappointing to hear but after we expressed what had occurred they comped our first round of drinks, which was appreciated. The bartenders were excellent. They were attentive and made fantastic drinks. It wasn't long until we ran into more issues. When my wife attempted to order her meal, they explained they were out of Filet Mignon. Unfortunately, my wife made the choice to order the New York Strip. The cook on the steak was perfectly rare, exactly as requested. Oddly, there was no seasoning on the steak. It tasted just like beef and heat. We attempted to revive the steak with putting our own salt and pepper on it but sadly it didn't quite work out and wasn't an enjoyable meal. The restaurant thankfully removed the charge from our tab. Her steak didn't come home with us, mine did. I ordered the Bone-in Ribeye and enjoyed my meal. We both enjoyed our sides: Mac and Cheese, Mashed Potatoes, Brussel Sprouts and Green Beans. In addition to the sides that we liked, we also ordered an appetizer (Brie) and dessert (Chocolate Pistacchio Cake) that were nice. After our mediocre dining experience, there is one final critique that needs to be assigned. My wife got very sick that night and spent the night of our anniversary on the toilet. I'll spare...
Read moreI’m so glad that this showed up today on my IG feed as I follow a couple of the Baltimore IG pod bloggers. But the title was “Hidden Gem in Baltimore” and man were they right!!! I take my son and his girlfriend to dinner about once a month and we have had some really good dinners and a couple really bad ones. Between the 3 of us once dinner is over we take a guess on what the total bill is then we rate the service and the food 1 out 10. This place got a 9 from us tonight. The service was great. Rob was our server her was super friendly. Came over as often as needed made sure we had everything we needed. Kudos to Rob he’s a 10 😉. We ordered the fried lobster tail (yum) and the cranberry Brie appetizer (yum). Omg but how can I forget the bread!!! It has this butter with just a hint of sweetness. It was so good. The only thing is we kinda felt weird about asking for more since it was 3 of us and they brought us exactly 3 pieces of bread. But it was yummy. My son got the burger that had bacon jam which was interesting and has a great flavor but he said they put just a little too much and his serving was huge. I got surf and turf, which was lamb chops and shrimp (yum). My son’s girlfriend got the duck confit which was meh 🫤. It lacked flavor: I also for the cheesecake to go which was definitely different that your normal cheesecake and it’s also yum! Overall it was great! I should have taken pictures but if you’re in Catonsville check them out. I know...
