Sweet Rhi — Restaurant in Charleston

In February we began our cake tasting adventure. The best part about wedding planning is the cake tasting. Mainly because that’s the only time I saw my fiancé 100% engaged in the planning process!  We wanted to do cupcakes with a few different flavors, and a small cake to cut. With Rhi, I communicated through The Knot and email to pick out the cake and icing flavors that we tried at the tasting. When we went to visit Sweet Rhi on James Island, I was impressed with how organized and prepared she was before and during the tasting. The cupcakes were plated and we had a glass of water. We tried five different cupcakes: strawberry, Oreo, dark chocolate with raspberry, lemon with lemon curd, and PB&J. Rhi was attentive to everything we had to say. She took notes on the comments for each flavor, and explained the ingredients in each cupcake. My fiancé could not get over how moist the cupcakes were, especially compared to the other vendors we had met with already. His halves were gone at the end of the tasting. Rhi boxed my leftovers for us to have later.

During the appointment I showed her inspiration pictures. She said that she had a lot of the items like the cupcake and cake stands that we could rent and get a security deposit back from her when the items are returned. All I needed to purchase was the cake topper, and communicate with the florist about cake flowers. We also talked about which flavor we wanted for the cake, and she added that she could do an anniversary cake for no charge! My fiancé and I had a list of our cupcake flavor rankings, which were different from one another. We agreed on the strawberry, but I expressed my concern with the cake being pink. Rhi was a problem solver. She explained with the icing the pink wouldn’t show until we cut it, and the strawberry flavor would be perfect for a summer wedding. She also listened and remembered the photos I showed, which had lots of bright summer colors like pink, explaining that it may compliment the idea of having a lot of summer colors at the reception. When she said this, I already she knew she was an excellent baker, the best we had met with, but also that she understood my vision of my wedding. We did the strawberry for the cake and an assortment of the other flavors for cupcakes.

As our wedding approached she confirmed all the details, and said she could set up my cupcake table for me using the inspiration photos I showed her. From the moment we met Rhi, we knew we were in good hands for our wedding cake. She was incredibly professional, warm, and genuinely excited about creating the perfect cake for our special day. The cake tasting was an event in itself – Rhi had prepared a stunning selection of flavors, each more delicious than the last. What truly impressed us was her dedication to making sure we found the perfect flavor combination. She went above and beyond by baking additional samples, incorporating our feedback and ideas, which helped us land on the most amazing lavender vanilla cake.

The lavender vanilla was a unique and sophisticated choice, and Rhi EXECUTED it flawlessly. The cake was moist, flavorful, and the lavender notes were subtle and perfectly balanced with the vanilla. It was a flavor that our guests kept talking, even after the wedding!

Rhi has a true artistic eye, and she created a cake that was both elegant and modern, perfectly complementing our wedding décor. It was so stunning that we almost didn't want to cut into it! It truly felt like a work of art, and it tasted just as good as it looked!

We are so glad someone recommended Rhi to make our wedding cake. From initial inquiry, to cake tasting, to final product, the experience was truly delightful. At the cake tasting, we tried about 6 flavor combinations and each was delicious. We settled on one layer of almond citrus with raspberry jam and vanilla icing and one layer of vanilla with strawberry rhubarb jam.

Between our bridesmaids and myself, we had a number of allergies in the group, but Rhi was able to create a tasty (and preciously decorated!) little vegan cake for our ceremony, and even made two nut-free cupcakes for our bridesmaid. The cake was a hit with everyone and received tons of compliments on the look and taste. The layers were light, fluffy, and perfectly flavored without being overly sweet (I’ve found that some vegan cake recipes are prone to excessive sugariness — but not in Rhi’s). Kids and adults LOVED the cake; the flavors were so unique but also had amazing appeal across all age groups and tastes!
