Went to French Quarter Bistro for dinner tonight. Was just OK, not up to the hype in some of the reviews⊠we arrived early for our reservation, which was no problem, because the restaurant was mostly empty at the time. We were seated quickly and Vicki, our waitress, came by immediately and took drink orders, and provided information about the nightly specials. Service was good, attentive, but not intrusive.
We ordered a gin martini and escargot as an appetizer. The cocktail was good, the escargot not so much. The escargot was presented in a low rimmed dish in a watered down butter sauce. The dish did not have much flavor. The tasted garlic bread on the side was great!!
We also added a bottle of chablis to finish the dinner. The wine was served at the appropriate temperature and was good. One observation about the wine list⊠It is comprised of mostly large producers, who emphasize volume over quality, so while there is something for everyone on the wine list, it is not that impressive.
For dinner, we ordered the sea bass special and the local snapper, blackened. The Seabass was very good, accompanied by a vegetable risotto. The fish was prepared well, but the sauce on top was very bland. The local snapper, blackened, was overcooked, and the fish was a bit tough. The sides of corn and rice were well prepared, but again lacked depth of flavor.
For dessert, we ordered the pecan pie, à la mode⊠The ice cream was delicious, but the pie was just OK. All in all, it was an OK meal, the price was not bad, but we likely would not go back, given the other dinner options on the island.
The place is loud, New Orleans piano music in the background (think Scott Joplin), the building is in need of repairs (the ceiling in the menâs room is caving in). Just not a...
Read moreNo restaurant is perfect, but I am confident that I've found one of my very favorite go-to places to stuff my face when I travel to St. Thomas.
I AM a spoiled New Yorker, but it's hard not to be when you live somewhere that you can order Turkish food at 3am on a Sunday and receive it well before sunrise.
That not withstanding, this place is alright...!
From the minute you are greeted by the host and sat down at your table to the useful smalltalk with your server you get the sense that you are in the midst of competant, confident professionals.
The lady and I enjoyed a couple glasses of a riesling that was as good as any I've ever tasted (I won't lie, I haven't really tasted many) then we warmed up with crab cakes (excellent) and escargot (my first time around, not hers) and it was rather tasty.
We both opted for the surf and turf entreé which was 4 or 5 large shrimp laid stop an 8oz strip steak with mashed potatoes and some asparagus.
The strip steaks were well seasoned and the mash potatoes were quite enjoyable, but the asparagus could've used some salt or something else to make it "pop" (I wouldn't give them any demerits for this and you probably shouldn't either, as I've struggled to find anywhere that makes aspargus greatly and I even struggle to do so at home).
All in all, we saunted away into the night air very satisfied, but not overstuffed and wouldn't you know, my bill was approximately the same as another nearby restaurant that we visited and found far less enjoyable.
Give 'em a try. I think you might...
Read moreThe absolute best meal I have had while in St. Thomas. Definitely one of the best places I have eaten in my travels. French Quarter Bistro has all the bases covered. The service here is TOP NOTCH! The host for the evening brought my wife and I to a stellar table l, like a true gentleman he pulled my wife's chair out for her. Talked with us for a bit and thanked us for dining with them that night. Lisa was our server for the night. She is delightful. Constantly checked in on us and made some incredible menu suggestions. So the food was just heavenly. We started with the escargot appetizer and French onion soup. The flavors of both were rich and spectacular. For the entrees my wife had a pasta dish with chicken and anduoille sausage with vegetables. I had the braised short ribs with pimento grits. Both meals were super plentiful in portion size and just magical in flavor. Then we moved onto to dessert. The options available for the night all sounded delicious. We went with the homemade vanilla cheesecake with berry sauce and the beignets. Talking with Lisa we were told that everything is made in house, including the berry sauce and whipped cream. The beignets were hands down better than the ones in New Orleans. Yup I said it!!! The cheesecake better than any in NYC. When you're in St. Thomas save a night for French Quarter Bistro. You will not be disappointed! Thank you for a magnificent evening French...
