Today was my 4th time trying Victoria's Bakery. I'm a junkie for baked goods (sweets especially) and my wife is a bagel fiend. Today I stopped in to try the coffee for the first time. The coffee is fine, but there are better options in town so it is unlikely that I will be back for it.
Like my previous 3 times patronizing the bakery, I perused the display cases of delectable-looking treats and breads. In the past, I've purchased items such as macarons, cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, cookies, focaccia, croissants, and bagels. Today I got a delicious-looking vanilla cupcake, a bacon egg and cheese brioche cup, and a bagel.
Before I get into it, let me reiterate: I love baked goods and eat a lot of them. I also enjoy supporting small, local-owned businesses. That being said, I think this will be my last time visiting Victoria's Bakery.
Every item I have tried has looked amazingly beautiful. There is no doubt that Victoria (and the other bakers/chefs) are artists. However, unfortunately, the taste just doesn't do it for me or my wife. The reason I have now gone back 4 times despite being disappointed in my food each time is because I keep wanting to to give it another chance. But, each time I continue to be let down.
Out of my 4 visits, the Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Brioche Cup that I ordered today was the best item I have had yet. But, for some reason, every time I eat their food, I get a headache almost immediately after. I'm not sure what causes this, but perhaps it is one of their ingredients. I've only ever had this same issue when eating gluten-free baked goods, vegan baked goods, or Crumbl Cookies... so maybe there is some common ingredient that my body doesn't like. I can't fault them for that, but just wanted to note it in my review.
Finally, I want to comment on the building and property itself. The building is very nice and is a big improvement from the multiple dilapidated buildings that formerly lined Mayfield Road. I also really appreciate their attention to detail and their focus on quality and farm-to-table ingredients.
My one complaint of the property is the seeming disregard for Quirk Cemetery, immediately behind the property on Woodside. There was once a nice natural barrier that kept the final resting place of some of Chesterland's oldest residents hidden and tranquil. Now, it is exposed and the only barrier is a chain link fence. To make matters worse, there are fake skeletons 'climbing' over the fence from the cemetery... this is a mockery and extremely disrespectful to the families of the people who are buried there (and this is coming from someone who assembles a fake cemetery with skeletons in their yard for Halloween.)
TLDR: The building and gardens are a beautiful addition to Chesterland. There is a great, rotating selection of baked goods, but in my experience (4 visits) they look better than they taste. The coffee is OK but there are better...
Read moreIt’s a cute bakery and they always have some interesting flavor options. Their hours aren’t amazing; they’re only open Wednesday-Saturday from 7 AM to 12 PM so I can literally only go on Saturday since I work full time. They don’t have a calendar or advertise the flavors ahead of time so you have to make sure to follow them on social media and wait for their posts but even then it’s not every item/flavor so mostly it’s a surprise. My only complaint is that, twice now, I’ve gone on a Saturday around 7:30 (half an hour into them being open) for specific flavors of their stuffed croissants and been told they’re not ready. It’s really frustrating as a customer when you have such a limited window to frequent the business, to follow their posts to see if they have the flavor you’ve been waiting for, and arrive early in the day because it’s a limited stock item, just to be told they don’t actually have them ready. It happened to me today when I went for pistachio croissants and thankfully it would only be a 10 minute wait for the item because I was going straight to work and wouldn’t be able to come back before they closed. (I actually was late to work because of the wait but to be fair I could’ve just left without them) Last time when I was trying to get the cookies and cream croissant they were nowhere near ready and they didn’t even give me the time estimate because it would be awhile so it was a bit of a...
Read moreI visited Victoria's Bakery for the first time this morning. I feel compelled to write a review because everything I purchased was great, but the chocolate croissants and cookies were absolutely outstanding. Very special. I have never tasted a better chocolate croissant. It was incredibly light and flaky and the flavor of the chocolate was smooth and blended perfectly with the light, buttery pastry. The cookies were perfectly baked with slightly crispy exterior and chewy and chocolatey interior. I heard people raving about the sourdough bread but I'm saving that purchase for a future visit. The staff fulfilling our order were exceptionally friendly and the long line moved very quickly with Victoria personally welcoming all she could while also running the business. The building is very classy and clean inside and out. Although I don't drink coffee, the coffee shop side of the building looked like a nice place to enjoy some solitude or tasty treats with a friend. Prices seemed fair to me given the quality. This bakery appears to be a real winner for those of us who live in the...
