âOUT OF TOWNERâ REVIEW - COFFEE IS GREAT, CUSTOMER SERVICE IS NOT FRIENDLY.
My family has been visiting Michigan for the past 6 years. We always make it a point to stop by the Sawyer shop each visit. From the first visit, I fell in love with this coffee. We can vividly remember the first time in the Owner himself was actually in the store behind the counter experimenting with a fun drink. The staff at the time was very approachable, with efficient service. We have also gotten to experience the 2nd shop in the downtown market area 2 years ago, same great experience & coffee.
Unfortunately yesterday was not anywhere near what weâve experienced in the past. My husband, brother in law, & sister in law went to the Sawyer store yesterday. We knew it closed at 5 so we tried to hustle from the beach that day. We made it around 4:15 with plenty of time- or so we thought.
2 people working, & they were both backed up making drinks for in store & online orders. We were looking at merch so we let a couple go before us in line. We all waited for about 15-20 minutes for anyone to get a drink order in. The couple before us received an apology for the long wait from the barista & even a smile.
When it came to our order, the very same barista turned cold. We had no clue why we received such different treatment. There was no apology for our wait, not even a hello.. she just stood there so I opened with a question about a drink. I bought some merch & 2 bags of coffee as well. She said her hands were too dirty to bag anything, & handed me the bag to put everything in myself. What an ODD thing to say to a customer. Iâve worked in customer service industry for years, even at a coffee shop before. So I do understand the time of day was hard, but the service yesterday was not anywhere what weâve experience before. That very same barista took my sister in laws order, & she said the same about her attitude. She even mentioned to another patron that they closed in 2 minutes when it was 4:45. There were a few stragglers that came in after us & each time her face became visibly angrier.
At one point she left the other barista to make all of the drinks while she was around doing closing duties. I cannot speak on the other barista, she was busy slinging drinks the whole time.
Just extremely disappointed in the service this time around. Had it been my first experience there, I probably would have never come back. I do still love the actual coffee, it is still one of...
Read moreDisappointed local. Update: I tried again a few times. Unfortunately my communication to the owner has not resulted in friendlier staff. I'm still not acknowledge when I enter even if there's no line and the Barista is busy cleaning or doing whatever it is they're doing so I stand around looking at merchandise and wait after putting a $20 an my keys on the counter. Then as he finally approached the cash register I get to stand in front of it at the same time and the guy who suddenly walks in next to orders as hes approaching and Dave looks at me and says "sorry" instead of letting the rude man in a hurry know I was first. I had hoped training would improve after I told the owner about the rudeness of the two ladies after I noticed mold on the chocolate Truffle I purchased and the refused to issue a refund. Tell your staff to at least say hi when customers cone to the counter.
Good coffee, decent atmosphere, but still not enough pastries to last even until early morning most times, year-round so far. Switching back to...
Read moreI was thoroughly impressed that they sell Sumatra Mandheling beans here. It is my favorite bean and a rare find, so to get them freshly roasted (9/15 and purchased 10/8) was a real treat! The seating area is cozy and welcoming, and they had a few seats outside too. The roaster is visible through a glass window in the back, and although the equipment is legit, it has a jerry-rigged feel since the it seems to empty into a (I'm sure dedicated for only coffee) big trash can. I wish they had a better method to determine the amount of cream and sugar customers prefer since they said they aren't able to put it out. Although they tried their darndest, and said they could do "camel color", they didn't leave quite enough "room for cream" so the end experience was less than desired. Still, this is clearly a place for coffee-lovers of all ilk, and they even had fun merch and refrigerated...
