An unexpected fine dining experience in Cibolo/Schertz. We stumbled upon this new dining establishment on our way into their neighbors location. Its a restaurant that is chef inspired, and belongs in the likes of those in the BlueStar and SouthTown parts of San Antonio. They had only been open 6 weeks at this point, but after eating here I hope it lasts.
The interior has a minimalist feel to it, with table accents that are geodesic glass terrariums. Abstract art hangs on the walls, and LED shrubbery line the walls. Plates and dishes are suited to the entree they are served on. Everything about it is classy and neat.
We started with the fried brussel spouts, an item I have not found many places. The server told us they were one of the top selling items. The menu described them as served in a hazelnut, ricotta, & balsamic reduction. Compared to similar items elsewhere, these held their own, and were different since they were prepared with cheese and nuts. Other places usually have a mustard garlic aioli style sauce.
We then ordered our entrees which were the Southern Fried Chicken, the Asado Chicken, and the Schnitzel. I struggled not to order the Poke Bowl but wanted an entree rather than an appetizer. I had wished they had offered an entree portion option.
Our food came out reasonably fast for a Saturday evening. The restaurant was about 1/3 full. The only downside of the dining area was the noise level which was reasonably high, despite being less than half full, and the bar area being empty.
My entree was the Schnitzel which was served with spaetzle, sourkraut and a cucumber salad. The cucumber salad was thin sliced cucumbers, in a greek style yogurt dill sauce. The Spaetzle was different from what most places serve, this was authentic. Most Texas places serve buttered noodles browned with cracker crumbs. These were individually battered and browned noodles, not overly flavorfull but complimenting the other items on the plate nicely. Now the Schnitzel, surprising to say, put the restaurants in Fredricksburg TX to shame. The meat was crispy with thin battered on the outside, while still being moist & flavorful inside. Very reminiscent to a good Japanese Tonkatsu. Most places fail to make either well, and this place got it right.
Once we were done with our meals, we were given a desert menu, we ordered the ice cream sandwich plate, which consisted of 3 sandwiches made from home made cookies and ice cream we were told was sourced locally from Breyers. The first of which was a snickerdoodle with coffee ice cream. The second, a chocolate chip with chocolate ice cream, and the last a raisin cookie with vanilla bean ice cream. The cookies were all delicious and the ice cream was paired nicely with them. We shared the plate as the single order was enough to finish the meal for the three of us.
The entire experience was an unexpected one. A very nice, classy restaurant with some unique menu choices. Good food and fair prices with many entrees falling in the $12-16 range. If your not a well seasoned foodie, this menu will definitely offer you some choices outside of your normal dining habits. It will be interesting to see how the menu evolves over time.
I will definitely be returning here as its a great place for a date or a nice dinner. I look forward to sharing it...
Read moreI thought a night out just my partner and myself would be a nice treat. Cibolo is growing fast so we wanted to try something new. I can say it was so loud my ears immediately started ringing. I thought maybe the party in the private area would quiet down after the food came. Nope! Took a While for my server to come. I saw she was being so friendly and helpful with everyone around her so I was willing to be patient. Sometimes the best servers just take a moment longer as they ensure nothing's missing. She came and seemed uninterested in us. We ordered our drinks and before I could ask her about the specials if any she was off. . . So i thought she will be right back... it was taking longer to come back. Saw that she was chatting with other clients so maybe they stopped her to ask something....it felt like She forgot about us. She came back and when I asked about the meat & cheese platters she seemed rushed to take my order and get back to her conversation. I thought maybe she is seeing old friends let her chat it up. I am with my partner after all.... she only comes back when the appetizer came back and sat it down and went back to her chatty self. I thought hey I'm eating.. I am also sitting on an empty glass of Pepsi. My headache is really cranking up as the group is louder now that they are done eating. So much so that my husband had to repeat himself 4 times before I said sorry I cant head you over the ruckus. You would have thought it was the world series it was so loud. No matter how loud it got the waitress named "Misa" was louder still . .... going on about her adventures across country & her husband and her school and all sorts of topics. I felt she gave none of that attention to myself or my partner. Maybe she didnt like us, oh well the server can be a bit off putting ... maybe the food will be mind blowing. . Wrong. The steak was ok ..my partner enjoyed it but said it seemed like the ladies who brought the meal weren't interested in the meal either. My food came the ravioli with added asparagus. still sitting on an empty glass of pepsi. the ravioli came topped with deep fried greens that tasted like oil (not in a good way) ok I'll set them to the side. But couldn't wash the flavors out of my mouth without something to drink... so I sipped the bottled tap water. Get halfway through my meal before i see a different server bussing her table. So I asked her for refill. She didnt give me any hesitation to bring over the Pepsi very fast. My meal seemed to be going better now that I think my server will be coming back. Wrong!... shes still chatting up the other table but not me. She drops the check and I decided I dont think we will ever be back. Too bad, my husband and I would rather spend the same amount of money to go into the city instead next time. Our money is just as good as the other table. Maybe Misa will learn to be more giving with her time to ALL...
Read moreWe love the fact that there are now two, actual chef run restaurants in Cibolo (our neighborhood)! We ventured into Mako's with high hopes but... We were seated in the bar area ( no reservation), that was cool. We waited 12 minutes before anyone greeted us (as they scooted past our table), another 5 until our server came over. With that kind of time alone with the menu, we were all ready with our whole order. We ordered the French fry appetizer. It came with two sauces of your choice, two of which were fancied up ketchups. My GF asked for simple, regular ketchup, we were told that "we don't have regular ketchup". Really? Unless you are buying your fancy ketchup from Sysco, I'll bet there is something that resembles plain ketchup back there somewhere! We ordered an iced tea, a glass of Viognier, and the whole branzino! Ten minutes later, the fries beat the drinks to the table! The drinks arrived. The tea was good, the wine, sadly, at room temperature. We ate the fries, they were hot, crisp and we'll seasoned. Our server asked if my GF wanted another tea, she said yes. 20 minutes later, the fish arrived. We Bagan to eat, then... the tea arrived, really. The fish was excellent! Well cooked and seasoned! We ate every bite! The fish sat stop a pile of fennel salad and white rice. The salad was tasty but, it contained the hard, woody, outer part of the bulb that were very unpleasant to chew. The rice was cold and crunchy and would have been better used for fried rice. My GF could have used another iced tea but, our server had apparently vacated the dining room after bringing the last tea! Our server finally came to clear our table. She removed the fish and plates and brought the dessert list. Then she removed the French fry cone contraption that had been sitting on our table since we finished the fries, 15 minutes before our dinner arrived. Dessert came out. Three cookie/icecream sandwiches. The icecream was excellent! Made by a friend of ours. The cookies...way too thick and hard, unpleasant. The bill came out promptly when we requested it...hmmm? The tab was very reasonable! The true cap to the evening was being near the bar where we watched our server behind the bar making drinks? All the while, the bar manager stood behind the bar, shooting the s#!t with friends. Oh, and he continually touched his face and blew his nose, never once did we see him wash his hands!! Hell, he never even turned away from the dining area! Overall... unpleasant and disappointing. They have really just opened so we will probably give them a second shot but with a seriously...
