The busiest bakery on the 4th of July.

Holy moly, was not expecting to see a line near out the door on the holiday weekend. But of course, such a line, must mean the quality is above and beyond impressive! Right?

Well looks-wise they certainly were. The names were hilarious, with things like millionaire tears, CE O-no!, and Trickledown. (I'm guessing they're not a fan of the current corporate climate) However, while funny, the names really didn't say what the favors were. Most of the nameplates did not describe it, they had no menu I could find inside that did, and because of how busy they were I did not want to be "that guy" and hold up the line asking about each one.

So I got a half dozen, feeling that would be a safe bet I'd find something among the ones I pick to enjoy. Of course not all of the doughnuts had silly names, which helped me pick them out, like Cinnamon bun, French toast, Strawberry frosted, etc. I even picked one of the gluten free ones, the red and blue frosted, which had a berry-like smell. All together coming to around $27, a fair but more than DD's, but hey, these were artisanal so fairs fair.

Back home I tried a wedge of each one, just to sample them and find my favorite. The French toast and cinnamon bun honestly tasted the same, super sugary, very thick with frosting, and a hefty cinnamon flavor. The strawberry was far lighter, but too much so, with a frosting that was more like a glaze. Could barely taste the fruity flavor I sought. Cinnamon sugar was nice, very thick, lots of even coverage, but the dough was so lacking in flavor that it really stuck out due to just how big the thing is. The trickledown, which is suppose to come with a shot of espresso, and I was offered one, but did not think the shot would fair well in a bready confectionary on my drive home so I declined. It was by far the most interesting, with a kind of custard interior that I imagine the espresso is poured into and slowly soaks through. The whipped topping was also nice, being real whipped cream and not more frosting. Sadly, things went sour real fast with the berry blast having a consistency of sand and a flavor of artificial fruit I could not get past. And I know it's not because it was gluten free, I've had good GF free baked goods before, this, was not it.

Overall, the experience was pleasant. The wait in line built up my anticipation, the choices were varied, and my favorite one wasn't even in a completed state. (the Trickledown) That said, just one of these bad boys really would be an entire dessert meal in and of itself. Sampling all 6, well, I'm off to enter...

The creatives ideas for the drinks every week and the donuts are really a breath of fresh air. I really see something in the art in their donuts and it feels like a really talented artist is expressing their world through the fun themes and designs in the donuts. That alone is astonishing and splendid, but I love their food menu too. There have been times it seems like a newer guy in the back has been making the food (im not biased just saying, when the older guy or a woman or person ive seen there long term is cooking in the back it always comes out a little better, just telling it how it is) but eventually when I come around the food always comes out perfect, and I totally understand, things change with the season and that’s OK with me and it’s still that reliable tasty formula when I have come and it looks like they have had a stand in cook. The food is pretty healthy and the donuts are healthier than others while being gourmet and tastier than others. I tend to move back and forth from the near the capital region over time so there might be long periods where I won’t have their donuts or be around, but when you come here long enough, a piece of your heart sorta belongs to their craft. Really amazing place! If I don’t make it back here soon I know some part of me will be comforted by the times I had the privilege of having this gourmet comfort food. 10/10...

WELCOME WELCOME WELCOME TO THE ALBANY AREA 😊 Bitchin Donuts is now in Albany, New York they were originally Birch Bark which was located in Glens Falls. People drove within a 200 mile range to get food from here. The history and following of this company is ETCHED IN STONE AS THE STANDARD OF A FULL VEGAN PLACE TO EAT, from sandwiches to comfort food to that lunch special to the drinks and the main thing which is well known their DONUTS 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 I was in the store today to welcome them and a couple was there and being the person to share the knowledge of in my opinion is the BEST VEGAN FOOD IN THE AREA, I mentioned the menu and everything I could think of that is GREAT to eat for us vegans. They do cakes by order and they are friendly clean and yes for my gluten free friends they have gluten free great eats. Please be aware they just opened and the full menu will be available soon, one thing I will say they will have vegan chicken drumsticks which is a staple in my house, and they make it so oh yes for that great place to eat while visiting Washington Park, visiting the Plaza, the Museum, or taking a stroll to Corning Preserve/Live at 5 summer events or any event in Albany please stop at Bitchin Donuts. THEY ARE 100% VEGAN and have GLUTEN FREE PRODUCTS AND 100% AWESOME...
