Sweet Basil is one of the best Thai restaurants in the area, which makes this review difficult. I dined-in on Sunday afternoon and specifically requested no bell peppers in the eggplant dish that I’ve had in the past and enjoyed very much. The first time I ordered shrimp and This time I order the seafood combination with the eggplant. The seafood is fresh and the eggplant melted in your mouth. I made the same request, no bell peppers snd was reassured that it will not be cooked with my order. Food arrived, it looked and tasted great. I started to feel full/ bloated, but attributed it to the appetizers we had consumed. Until, I stirred the stew and saw the red bell pepper and then I knew why I was bloated. I pointed this out to the waitress and was told that they will make me another dish without the peppers. She reassured me that they would make me a new order and not remove the pepper and return the dish to me, as other restaurants have done. What folks do not understand, when you have an allergy to something, is that the pepper seeps into whatever you are cooking and you have the same reaction as if you’ve eaten the peppers. She asked if I wanted to eat the newly prepared food and by then I was fully bloated and uncomfortable, and told her that I will take it home. I was too uncomfortable when I got home and into the evening and decided that I didn’t trust that they prepared a new dish for me and have the food to a friend, who stopped by with gas-x and heart burn OTC medicine. My friend confirmed that it was not a new egg plan dish, but, the content of what was in the plate that I did not eat. I was miserable all night snd was glad that I gave the food away. This is not the first time this has happened to me in restaurants in Albsny. The lesson that I take away from this experience, is not to order a dish that contains items that you cannot eat and to stay away...
Read moreMy favorite Thai restaurant!! The first time I came here I was 9 years old and had my first Pad see eww. I loved it and to this day every time I come here I order Pad see eww. 12 years have passed since my first time eating at Sweet basil, I have had pad see eww all around the Saratoga area, the Schenectady area, in the Buffalo NY area, and in NYC and STILL the pad see eww at sweet basil is the best I have ever had. Also the crab rangoons are the best! The atmosphere is beautiful with traditional thai Decor and beautiful paintings on the wall are great. I always love when restaurants of foreign cuisine play their traditional music and they do that here at sweet basil. You feel like you are in Thailand. Sweet basil is my favorite restaurant with the BEST pad see eww and crab Rangoon s. I’m eating here tonight and can’t wait!! The only reason why someone may give this place a bad review is because they don’t have many employees and can be a little slow. But if you want a good meal(which is more important) then sweet basil...
Read moreSweet Basil is a very cozy place, serving flavorful Thai cuisine in downtown Albany. I had lunch there and ordered the fried calamari, and Thai fried rice with shrimp.
The calamari was interestingly cut. It was not in rings, but in strips, so it was actually more meat than you'd expect, and less of the batter. It was served with a pleasantly sweet dipping sauce.
When my entree came out, it was a huge bowl of steaming shrimpy goodness. The rice was perfectly browned, and had a really great smoky flavor you can only get by taking your time. The shrimp was well cooked, but not overcooked and there was enough there to be a dinner.
What really made it for me were the little things like how much egg and vegetables were in the rice to balance everything out. I'm kind of ashamed to admit that I ate every grain, but it was that good.
The only critique I could possibly say is a little more salt on the calamari would have made this a 5 star. That being said, I will definitely...
