Simple Pub Experience, nothing fancy.
Graney's is the place to go if you want a couple drinks, some decent pub food and (possibly) catch a game or two on TV. If you're a beer/food snob, you're probably better off somewhere else.
Food: The standard pub fare is just what you think: good fried foods (especially the wings and the moz sticks - LOGS, actually...they're huge!) at decent prices. If you go beyond that they can be hit or miss, though the wraps and quesadillas are decent as well. My last visit, I was a bit disappointed by the chicken tenders, both size and quality, that I got in a "best of" their make-your-own sampler option, but the fresh cooked bacon on the potato skins made up for it.
Drinks: Pretty standard domestic selection of beers, but lacks the "craft" selection newer and upgraded bars have to offer (they have some, but not much). Beer snobs, beware. That said, the regular deals, prices, and pitchers (as an option to save) make up for it, in my opinion. Mixed drinks are another good option as they're a healthy pour...get a double, it's worth it.
Atmosphere: Graney's is like any other local pub except it is COMPLETELY lined with TVs. If you want to catch a game, this is a great place - even better than some nearby "sports bars". It's not the cleanest place in the world (despite a few recent remodels), but if you're complaining about it, you're in the wrong place. The staff are super friendly and generally attractive women - to the point where you might get a "creepy old man" vibe at the bar area (not judging - just saying). And they're competent and quick for the most part unless it's SUPER busy, which it can be during certain times, but not unlike any other place.
All in all, It's one of my favorite places to meet up with friends in the area to get a cheap drink/snack or to watch a game. I highly recommend the Mozzarella logs with raspberry sauce and hot-garlic wings - Extra blue cheese, of course. And a 2x IPA OR a double captain and coke to wash it down (if i'm...
Read moreThis is a small place in the knot of businesses on New Scotland Ave that include restaurants, bars, and other services for the neighborhood around Ontario and Quail Streets. Graney's isn't competing with the new fancy schmancy gastropub-type places and it seems to be staying with the classic pub foods, which makes it feel like there's a little stick in the mud attitude. There are about 20 television screens going, which means wall to wall non-stop flickering. I find this simply annoying. The sounds were also way out of date, and even though they're from my rockin' younger days, it's time to let go after 30 years, in my opinion. So I tried the wings and a salad with a cider to wash it down. Everything was prepared fresh to order. The house greens salad was a mix of salty and sweet and the Italian dressing brought everything together in a crispy delicious and refreshing start to my patched together meal. I had the mild wings, just to get a sense of what their heat scale is, and they were very mild, which was perfect for me both times I had them. I'll probably venture up the heat scale eventually, although there are plenty of other sauce choices beyond the Buffalo sauce. The classic hot sauce was just the ticket for these hearty treats. This is not fine dining, but it's ok pub food and I found the service to be friendly, attentive and responsive to...
Read moreWent here on a Wednesday night. They were not busy. The bar was not full and there were open tables. We ordered fries with cheese and gravy and two orders of wings. It took them about an hour to get our food out. The waitress angrily dropped the fries off and said "they don't have any gravy". If you don't have gravy, that's fine. The cook should have said something when the order came in, the waitress should have told us and asked us what we wanted to do, and we would have told them to take the fries off. This did not happen. When the waitress dropped off the check the charge for gravy was still on the check, so I told the waitress. We weren't asking her to take the fries off, only to take off the charge for the gravy that we didn't get. She took it and when she returned with the new check, angrily putting it on our table as she walked by. The fries were taken off, which they honestly should have been in the first place. She didn't need to be rude about it. It wasn't our fault she was having a bad day.
The wings are pretty good for wings but it's clear that you should only come here for booze,...
