The breads and pastries at Kingston Bread + Bar could hold their own among the best bakeries I’ve had the good fortune of visiting in New York City, San Francisco, and Paris. Having a bakery of this quality in the area makes a real difference in my household’s quality of life. We haven’t tried their dinners or beverages yet, but we’ve sampled most of the bakery items and their sandwiches. Everything has been delicious, though I feel that the breads (our favorites include the sourdough, levain, kamut, baguettes, and milk bread buns) and the croissants are the stars of the menu.

I also really appreciate their safety-oriented COVID policies and their online preordering and pickup system, which we have often depended on for safe shopping.

The staff has also been lovely. A family member of mine emailed them with a special request about pickup, which KB+B staff kindly accommodated.

Check out the additional products in their small but meticulously curated pantry and fridge, which is the stuff of charcuterie dreams. The house-made country pâté, and the labneh and zaatar dip, are sublime.

Just one request: please put the canalƩs on the...

I was really looking forward to coming here. I love Rough Draft and have had bagels a couple of times there. So the joint venture here seems perfect. Of course, I might be pre-disposed to loving the place. I have two complaints. First it’s cumbersome to buy food at one counter and drinks from another. This is especially annoying as the place gets busy and you need to wait on line on both. Second they need more seating. Of course busy means that seating will always be limited. But there are areas that scream for a couple of tables. The beer is great. I expected that. I haven’t had the coffee here yet. But I’m sure it’s the same yummy coffee I get at Rough Draft. As to the bread part: I recently had the grilled cheese sandwich. It was incredible. The breads are always great so cheese wiz would have tasted good. But they used a yummy cheddar cheese with a twist. The twist was a creamy ricotta cheese. Would you have ever thought to add a little ricotta to a grilled cheese sandwich? Well now I’m thinking about it. Thank you Kingston...

Hit or miss depending on when you go, but for the price it shouldn't be. Wait can be long even just for a simple grab and go order just to buy a loaf of bread. I think they are doing way too much at once instead of scaling in size. Has this hipster and aloof type of vibe and like others have said, staff definitely are not friendly. Go down a few steps to Deising's and their staff is far nicer and don't act like you are a bother. I'm not asking for conversation here, just for some acknowledgment and a reply to my thank you. Their bread "can" be good if you time it right, but if not you may get a stale, chewy, too burnt flat loaf, but when it is good it is really good. But I don't like gambling $10 to wonder if the loaf will be good or bad that day. Not a place I would frequent often or go out of my way, but maybe occasionally as there are other places that sell bread around here. Also good luck getting their bread of the day or what you want as they are frequently sold out of various items even if you head in...

WEEKEND GUIDE: KINGSTON, NY I love this little town so much-- have been 4x over the last few years, and it's the perfect weekend getaway from NYC! Here are my fave spots: STAY @hotelkinsley -- I brought my mom here for a weekend and then J and I stayed here this past trip, and I couldn't love it more. There are rooms across several historic buildings, and there's such attention to detail in every unique room (and heated bathroom floors!). One of my fave boutique hotels I've ever stayed at! EATĀ + DRINK @villagecoffeeandgoods -- this is a must-stop for me with great coffee, a ton of local baked goods (usually a couple GF/vegan options!), lots of great breakfast/lunch options, pantry goods from local businesses, and beautiful ceramics from local makers. @sweetmaresas -- a vegan bakery (they had some GF options, but nut-based!) that's also full of fun pantry goods and a great assortment of beverage options. @yumyumnoodlebar -- this is a local favorite and has GF options! @brunettewinebar -- a gorgeous little wine bar with so many fun varieties and lots of great bites too. @kingstonbread -- a super popular bakery/cafe (not really GF-friendly tho!) in town. SHOP @rivermintfinery -- a higher-end shop with beautiful clothes, jewelry, and candles. @hamiltonandadams -- a great shop with clothing for all, lots of fun upstate gifts/souvenir-type items that aren't cheesy, and is so fun to browse. @florabeauty_newyork -- skincare services, lots of cleaner beauty products, and some wellness goods too! @bluecashewkitchen -- for kitchen / food / drink lovers, I could stay in here for hours browsing all the trinkets. @esterwine -- such an amazing wine + spirits shop with so much variety and the friendliest staff! @shopcapitalvintage -- a really cool vintage spot with clothes, home goods, and more. Bark & Biscuit -- for all the dog parents out there, you gotta get something for your pup here. Half Moon Books -- classic bookstore that's full of every genre. @roughdraftny -- a dream place that has coffee, beer, cider, ample room, and shelves full of books. built in a historic academy building and has such a nostalgic feel! Went in this morning for the first time. Have to say, I was extremely disappointed. We wanted to get a dozen bagels to go, but we’re told the limit was 3. I thought the point of moving out of Rough Draft into your own space was to expand production capabilities. I don’t think a dozen bagels is an unreasonable request from a customer. May change my review in the future, but my first impression was not a good one. Edit: we decided to get 2 bagels, a sesame and a poppy. About an hour after buying them, I decided to try one. These are the thinnest bagels I’ve ever seen. Tasted okay, but there were a few parts that were still doughy. For a bakery that boasts about hand rolling its bagels, the end product was even more disappointing than the experience of trying to purchase them. Glad we couldn’t order a full dozen. Keeping my rating at a 1.

Kingston Bread + Bar is a treat time and time again. The owner has a passion for food and it shows. Try the naturally leavened sourdough breads, the cinnamon scrumps, or the croissants! My family from Paris can't get enough of the croissants. They are the best! I love that they source local products whenever they can. Also, the staff is very friendly and it is always clean inside. This restaurant opened just before the pandemic and has pivoted to meet the demands of the community and local guidelines. Keep up the great work in Uptown Kingston!
