Ruben Jrs Supermarket & Deli — Restaurant in City of Middletown

Honestly the first time I went I thought the food was really really good and I had no complaints.The second time I paid closer attention while they cooked the food, the grill is right in front of you so you can see everything. I have no plans on ever returning. I witnessed them reaching into the raw meat to put it on the grill then reach into the onions to also put that on the grill.There's a big slab of beef just sitting on the counter open to air that they would occasionally go over to cut some meat off then go right back to cooking and in between touching everything from refrigerator handles, cooking utensil etc! With absolutely no gloves anywhere to be seen. I definitely didn't see anyone wash their hand the whole time I was there. The wait was extremely long and the meat burnt, yes I stayed and ate because I was having a conversation and didn't notice anything until it was to late,2 gentlemen were cooking and neither one had gloves.Absolutely nasty! touching raw food, chopped vegetables and everything else then putting your...

I was eating some awesome hot dogs at local hole in the wall dive called 'Holydog', which is a must try also. The Owner there said that I have to try Rubens and order the Huraches. He kept ranting and raving about them so I gave it a try. He was on the money with his suggestion. This is another little dive that you ordinarily would'nt think of going to. I was lucky to hit an off peak time and sat at the counter to eat in. I was served in 15 minutes so the wasn't too bad. I ordered a steak Hurache with everything on it and it was so unique taste ing like nothing I ever ate before. Pure awesome! As I was walking out I was thinking when is the next time I'll be in Middletown so I can come back here. I wasn't turned off by the appearance like some have mentioned. I didn't feel uncomfortable eating there once I sat down. That atmosphere lends to the experience and taste of the food. You got to try this place if you like off the grid Mexican. There is literally nothing bad that can be said about Ruben Jrs. Their tacos are amazing, simple, inexpensive and loaded. I have been to other taco spots around the mid Hudson area and by far Rubens is my favorite. My gf and I plan on going there for our 1 yr anniversary. Sounds crazy if you've ever been in the place, cuz it's literally a few shelves of product, a long counter for dine in and usually pretty hot, but those tacos ... Best in southern NY, if you ask me. Rubens has been featured on our Facebook and Instagram stories more times than I can count.

I have been getting tacos from them for the past 7 or so years, and plan on continuing that as long as I possibly can.
