I will start off by referring you to a better location. Sweet Potatoes Restaurant ( 393 North Ave) Is only a 2 minutes drive away. The food is better. The people there are nice and theres never any drama. Food does not get dropped, and there are no babies crying in cribs.
Also, DO NOT use the sugar plum for catering, as they are not reliable and there is a very real chance that she will cancel your order the day of, and you will be left to scramble last minute.
Its really a shame, because the owner really gets in her own way. This is my first time leaving a bad review. There are enough bad reviews for you to get the point. So Iāll make it simple for you and leave bullet points of what Iāve witnessed.
I have personally witnessed the owner:
use words like ābitchā to both staff and CUSTOMERS drop trays of food her prices are not clear and fluctuate have customers wait OVER AN HOUR only to tell them sheās too stressed out to complete the order she told us to come back and that she would compensate us for waiting so long, and then cursed us out when we asked for the compensation. her own daughter had to try to calm her down using statements like āyouāre being very unprofessional with customers here.ā
Iāve seen her be cordial and friendly to people that matter. However, if you are a new customer, your best bet it to drive the 2 minutes, or walk the 8 to 393 north ave and call it a day.

Thereās no pic or description on menu. She seems annoyed. Question is unanswered. Red Flag #1. We wait several minutes. See other customers get their orders . She calls us to the counter -- not our order . We wait some more , she calls us to the counter AGAIN, it is still incorrect. Purposeful ? Maybe. Unclear where miscommunication lies, order was recorded on receipt. At this point my bf is upset and the cashierās reply is : "not my fault, talk to the manager" at which point the manager waddles over and rudely asks "What's the PROBLEM? " Atp thereās a clear indication our issue has escalated well beyond food. In summary a huge argument between the boisterous and obnoxious kitchen warden continues with my partner for several minutes. Very loud and embarrassing scene. Also ā¦still hungry. Every time I have called in for an order or visited, each person has demonstrated extremely poor customer service skills, which tells me that is the culture of this establishment. I have called several times after 1pm and they were not opened. I was provided with an additional number to call, by the staff, and when I call it to check if they are opened, the woman is very nasty and rude. I try to support black owned businesses, always. However, I would NEVER recommend this place to anyone to patronize; the customer service is ghetto and disgustingly unprofessional. I have eaten down the block at Sweet Potato Soul Food Restaurant on North Ave and though a bit pricier, the food is great and the customer service has NEVER been an issue for me or anyone I have recommended the place to, unlike Suggarplums, where every person I speak to about this place has the same horrid customer service experience.
