I was shocked to hear about another Italian restaurant this old (1929) up here when I read Hudson Valley magazine awhile back. I knew about Milanese nearby, but I was far from impressed when I tried it. Between this and a few other Italian places--and a hell of a beer store--I decided to take a joy ride up to Poughkeepsie. After a scenic cruise via Verranzano Blvd and Brookside Ave, I was there. Aloy's certainly doesn't look like much from the outside. Just a little white house that's been converted into a restaurant. The inside has a mix of old school Italian decor, with burgandy colored walls and a long bar. In addition to the main dining room, they have a room or 2 for private parties. There were several older gentlemen at the bar eating sandwiches for lunch, some stock market program on the TV, and the owner's wife running things. She was awesome despite the demure setting. I chatted her up and stuck with my choice of a small pizza. The trip up here wasn't for nothing. This was the best pizza I've had in the Hudson Valley. Despite the history, Aloy's pies are of the grandma genus. But it's a absolutely great grandma pie. Their sauce is bright and flavorful, the cheese used is fresh and not overwhelmingly applied, and although the crust sags, it is very crisp and a bit flaky on the outer edge. Like a great bar pie, the edges can carmelize a bit with the cheese. Perfectly simple, well balanced, and absolutely delicious. This was damned close to being on an elite level. They also offer a marinara pie with just tomatoes and grated romano cheese. The owner's wife told me that some people even order it plain without the grated cheese. Reason for that is probably because their grated cheese is real Romano cheese, not the cheap crap that has wood pulp in it that is sometimes served, and it is quite strong. Regardless that
The entire time I was here, I heard the beat of them tenderizing veal cutlets for dinner. Eventually the owner/chef came out to check on the dining room area and I talked to him too. Great guy, with a direct lineage (non-familial) going back to the original owners. I can't vouch for the rest of the food, but my family gave it a fair review. What I can vouch for is the owners, and definitely for the pizza. If you like a thin, crisp crust,...
Β Β Β Read moreUpdate #2 Although I'm not a big fan of Aloy's pizza (see below), I ordered one of their other menu items, Chicken Francais, and it was very good. The chicken was tender and the sauce had a nice lemony taste. It came with a salad, which I ordered with with their house dressing with crumbly blue cheese, and pasta in marinara sauce - both of which were very good. We also ordered Tartufo for dessert which was also delicious. I've raised my overall rating from 3 to 4 and now recommend Aloy's.
Update I've had Aloy's pizza a few times now and the taste is really starting to grow on me. Unfortunately they are extremely inconsistent with respect to the crust. The crust is always thin but not always crunchy. More often 'floppy'. Again, interesting/ good taste just very inconsistent when it comes to the crust. Original review
Despite living in/around Poughkeepsie for 50+ years, I've never been to Aloys. I've heard their pizza is legendary, and the food is fantastic, unfortunately that was not my experience but I'm going to go back and give it another try. For now, all I can give it is 3 stars.
On the plus side the staff is friendly and attentive. Although the atmosphere is nothing special and somewhat dated, there's still something appealing about it. As you come in there's a bar to the right and the dining area is to the left. Past the dining area is a large room for parties.
As far as the food goes, we had their pizza. It took a VERY long time to arrive. My dining partner has had their pizza many times before and loves it. Me, not so much. It's thin crust (which I do like) and we had half cheese and half pepperoni. The cheese only pie was better as it was much less oily with a crispy crust. I could easily pick it up and eat it. The pepperoni was very oily. It also had a thin crust but was far too 'floppy' to pick up. The taste for both was just ok. There are a lot of reviews that speak highly of the pizza, so perhaps it's just me because I'm just not tasting it.
The next time I go back I will try something other than the pizza and hopefully be able to...
Β Β Β Read moreUpdated review- It wasn't busy when we arrived. We were immediately greeted and seated. Our drinks were Sloop Juice bomb for my husband and coffee for me. There was no coffee β so our server Holly made me a fresh pot, this was very much appreciated. We chose the fried zucchini sticks as appetizer, they arrived super hot with a nice portion. Main course my husband chose the chicken parm with side of pasta and minestrone to start. I chose a salad π₯ along with eggplant rollatini and side of pasta π. Everything tasted great. We brought home out dessert which consisted of Tiramisu and some chocolate pudding cake. I can't say enough good things about Holly. She always had a smile π which I could tell even when she was wearing a mask. We were checked on several times during our meal. This experience was perfect. I'm glad we have this place another chance. I have it another star β as a result. Thank you Holly. Hopefully we will see you soon!
The food was very good π I had sausage & kale lasagne from the daily specials menu. My husband opted for chicken parmesan. Their portions looked average but we both had a hard time finishing, in this case our eyes were bigger than our stomachs. We were greeted & seated quickly and ordered just as quick. Our service was a bit disappointing. We were taken care of by two people and after finishing was asked if I would like coffee or and I did order a coffee. After waiting about 10 minutes one of our servers asked if we would like coffee or dessert and I simply said no as I had lost...
