On a sleepy little street, in the lusty city of Clifton Heights, Pennsylvania, two would be diners in search of a quick bite before a show found authenticity. We're from Northeast Philadelphia, and after a quick Google search for a bar and grill close to the Tower Theater, my wife and I decided on Clam Tavern. Judging by the unassuming facade, clean looking bar, and appetizing pictures of fish sandwiches and shell fish, we figured we found a good choice to swoop in and get a bite before the Snow Patrol show at 8 PM. We arrived at 6 PM. No such luck! Apparently the word was out, and we were quickly informed that without a reservation, there was at least a 2 hour wait. For bar food! In the aging hamlet of Clifton Heights? Our curiosity was peeked, and although we resigned ourselves to a night of fast food dining, we knew we would have to come back. While commiserating with a lovely couple outside, Dennis and Marion, who informed us that this was no ordinary greasy spoon, we were approached by a well-dressed man who looked like he may have been a mob enforcer. He had obviously overheard our conversation and asked us if we tried the establishment across the street. We said we had, and that the wait was 45 minutes. Without a pause, he said, hold on, I think I can make this happen. Moments later, we were escorted to the Broadway Bar and Grille and to our tables by the gentleman, who we would later find out was the owner, Anthony Blanche. Anthony is a larger than life figure. He is the kind of guy who can orchestrate the affairs of two amazing restaurants simultaneously, meeting and greeting all, and yet when he speaks to you, you feel as if you are the only person in the room. It’s a gift. But more importantly, so is the food. The drinks came quickly as did the appetizers (both baked clams and clams casino, fried mozzarella and crab balls). My wife had the crab ravioli, and after one bite I said, forget Anthony, who’s the chef! In one word, delicious. I had the stuffed shrimp with crab, and it was the bomb. To anyone over 50 or without young kids, that means great. Our waitress was friendly and attentive yet not overbearing, and Anthony thanked us again for coming. We left satisfied and pleased. We had begun our night in search of good and found great. Be not fooled, Broadway Bar and Grille and Clam Tavern are 5-star dining experience wolves in sheep’s clothing. Before Saturday, my wife and I didn’t know much about Clifton Heights, PA, but that night we found its capital. It was well worth the trip and we...
Read moreWe had a terrible experience at our family's early mother's day dinner. I had the broiled seafood combination. I was surprised how small the portions were for a $40 meal. It was OK, the shrimp had been frozen, and the crab imperial was way too salty and undercooked in the clam shell in was served in. I sent it back for more cooking. The same portion came back after we had finished our meal with the same problems. I told my server we couldn't eat it and I would like $10 off the meal since the crab was 1/4 of the seafood in the meal. After another long wait (I saw our waitress walk across the street to the Clam Tavern), a woman staff member came to the table, I assume she was someone at a higher level, was very defensive about the dish, repeatedly accused me of being wrong, rolled her eyes and walked away while I was talking after I told her I'd like $10 taken off my check. After talking to the chef, she offered $5 off because the scallops cost more. This was a $70 check and they think it's good service to treat me so disrespectfully and waste my time negotiating over $5. REALLY, CLAM TAVERN????? Your business is in that bad of financial shape? I paid the bill but should have walked out. I'll be submitting a dispute to the credit card tomorrow. Don't waste your time and money at these restaurants. The food is marginal and the staff/management are defensive and abusive. The ole Clam and...
Read moreMy wife and I love this place! The food is amazing. We typically start with Fried Pickles and Buffalo Wings. My wife loves the Parmesan Chicken and I am obsessed with the Broadway Signature. It's your choice of meat(roast beef, turkey, roast pork, meatloaf, bbq pork to name a few) served atop a freshly made Jalapeno-Cheddar Waffle with Mashed Potatoes and Vegetable du jour (usually broccoli).
The prices are very reasonable for the amount of food. The Broadway Signature is ~$13.95 and I always have leftovers to take home.
The place is small but not cramped. High-top and low tables. TV's with all the local teams on. Service is usually quick and very friendly, though sometimes can slow down when at capacity due to the small wait staff. The food makes up for it though! They have a nice bar with a rotating selection of about 6 drafts.
Some other items we like are: Sweet potato waffle fries Roast Pork Sandwich Black and blue Chicken Cheesesteak Eggrolls Fried Mozzarella ( not Mozz sticks, but real Mozzarella breaded and fried up golden brown)
Don't pass...
