I've been extremely sick recently and I was craving excellent Mexican food since I've been feeling better. I really wanted to enjoy this place, especially since it has been around for so long, but unfortunately the food just missed the mark. The rice has a strong tap water (we all know that flavor) taste, and both the chicken and beef were overcooked, stringy, and lacking seasoning. I guess maybe so it's not so spicy for all us "white" people but I just want authentic. Honestly, it was hard to tell the two apart flavor wise, except for the color.

During my visit, I very clearly asked for shredded cheese added to my plate, but I was given a nacho cheese dip made from pasteurized American cheese, which was very disappointing for an authentic Mexican food restaurant. On top of that, the bill was higher than expected. $8.99 instead of the $8.50 on the menu for Flautas, plus an extra 99 cent charge for the cheese and a small 35 cent fee that was never explained. Not expensive, but not correct either

The service was quick, which I appreciated, but everything else was mediocre. I just did not feel like their hearts are in the food at all. The food was okay, but not much better than that.

Having grown in the Southwest, I know what authentic Mexican food should taste like. This is a watered down Americanized version.

Maybe it was just what I bought today but unfortunately I wasn't impressed. Based on all of the other reviews, it is very clear that they could do...

UPDATE: We have been back a number of times, and I am updating my review to 5 stars due to the service vastly improving! I have held off writing this review for a while. This was our go-to place for a long time. But the last two visits were maddening. It basically comes down to inattentiveness. We came in, and there was plenty of seating available. As soon as we walked in to wait to be seated, there was a large party that walked in after us. We moved to the side to let them in, and they were immediately seated. Then people came up to pay. They were served. People came in for to go orders. We are still waiting. After about 15 minutes of standing around, some of that time, no one was at the front of the house, we were finally seated. Everything was fine from then on. Let it go, no big deal.

The second time, no one is at the front. People walking around in the back. Not a busy day. We still had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated. And then we're we forgotten about, no one came to our table. We left after about 20 minutes. We went to another Restaurant and had a great time.

I really do like this place, and I want it to do well. Please fix this issue. I am sure we will try again some time...

So I've been to this restaurant dozens of times, and tonight marks only the 2nd time I've had a mistake with my order but it was a HUGE one. I placed an order for a steak fajita chimichanga and large cheese dip, called in my order at 8:13 pm was told 10-15 mins showed up at 8:25 order wasn't ready no big deal I waited till 8:46 before I received my order. Upon getting home and getting settled for dinner I take a biteout of my chimichanga to find out I have just eaten shrimp !!!! I am allergic to shrimp which is why always, always repeat Steak and when I got to the restaurant the lady behind the counter asked what I ordered and again told her.I called the restaurant back after puking for about 15 minutes and they offered to remake my order. No thanks I'm good, so brought the food bac to the restaurant and received after a PARTIAL REFUND!!! After you literally poisoned me and had my waiting 3 times as long as you said.Drive can to your restaurant you didn't have the decenys to refund my order in full ??!! You have lost my business for life. And I hope...

El Indio is...INTENSE. The restaurant is long and narrow, with only one aisle, creating a freeway of activity in the center. All staff wear earpieces, taking instructions and hurrying around at a frenzied pace. Guests in this aisle instinctively pick up their pace to match. This is NOT a Mexican restaurant where you feel at leisure nor will you experience a laid back discussion with the staff. However, it is interesting to watch the military style activity. The food has been delicious during all my visits. The pork chops can be a bit overcooked, but many prefer it that way. The menu is extensive and the prices are great.

Updated 6/2024 This is still my favorite Mexican restaurant to go to. The owners and staff have always been great to my family and friends. They are like family to me and I thank each and every one of you at El Indio for always making me feel right at home! Great food and service. They have updated the inside and made it a very inviting place to enjoy you dinner.

Stopped in again on our way back home for some more Excellent fajitas before an Excellent concert in downtown Knoxville at the Bijou Theater 09/09/2025. Excellent Mexican food in the fringes of Knoxville Tennessee. We had fajitas with chicken, steak and shrimp that was excellent and priced very affordable. I will be stopping by the next time I'm in town.
