Ok, we've been to Family Pizza Restaurant & Grill about four times in the last two months. We usually end up there for late breakfast on weekends and we only go there because they offer late breakfast....pancakes and eggs at noon is hard to find in other local area restaurants.
The food is pretty good, no complaints other than my sunny side up fried egg was a bit over done and cold when served. Prices are a bit high for some items but this is one of the rare restaurants that only charges $.75 for an extra egg to go with my pancakes. Coffee used to be $.99 for a bottomless cup but seems like that special has fallen by the wayside or at least the sign disappeared from the lawn out front and coffee is more expensive now. .
Service is unbelievably poor for the number of black dressed waitresses present. Just don't understand their idea of service. You seat yourself. Eventually a waitress comes by with a menu and asks for the drink order. The drinks get dropped off and the waitress disappears for 10-15 minutes. By the time your're ready for a coffee refill someone may come by to take the order. They take the order, promise coffee, and disappear for another 10-15 minutes. Sometimes the food comes next and sometimes the coffee comes next but even if you ask for coffee when the food is served chances are you won't get it on her next run through. One more request and coffee refills may be offered. Today my meal was half eaten before I received the requested knife to cut my food and before my husband got that second cup of coffee. And then, the waitress filled his cup but ignored the two nearby tables with empty cups.
Just don't understand it. There doesn't seem to be one waitress for one section. They all seem to chip in to help but the service just doesn't get done even with so many waitresses. One will wipe down a table, go back to the kitchen but not take the dirty dishes with her. Another will bring the coffee pot for your refill but ignore the other two tables nearby also waiting for coffee refills.
We keep going back because of the late breakfast service but the late service leaves us just plain perplexed. So many waitresses and so little service. We just...
Read moreThe food is fantastic — my favorite in Colchester so far — but service, unfortunately, can be hit or miss. Let’s start with what I do love about this restaurant. There is a nice diversity of what they offer in respect to meals and they are in a nice and central location near downtown Colchester. When we’ve eaten here (not very often, but a couple of times), the service has been pretty good and there are televisions as well to monitor local happenings.
We usually pick up from here and have so dozens of times. The estimated wait times are accurate about 80% of the time, but we have had at least one experience where we needed to be somewhere and ended up waiting an additional 30 to 40 minutes on top of our original estimate to receive the food we ordered.
Prices for the food (and it is good!) are also rather high by comparison of similar restaurants and we have gotten charged extra for certain condiments and things that we did not think warranted such charges. We have also been charged (and have had added) for food we did not order. While about 70% of the time the order is correct completely, there have been mistakes in the past and so we almost always check everything now before we take off.
Improvements that could be made in terms of the takeout itself: utensils and condiments. You need to request the former or you don’t get them. This is atypical of most places we’ve gotten takeout from. Never have gotten salt or pepper or anything like that with my takeout breakfasts either. I imagine this might be a money-saving idea but it’s quite annoying if you intend to grab food and go somewhere else. Also the containers themselves are not microwaveable and they use aluminum foil to line the bottom of some of the styrofoam containers. This has come off sometimes as I have scraped the last bits from my meal, leading me to wonder if I have gotten an extra and unneeded bit of metal in my stomach.
Those asides: it is a great place to grab a bite in town and I would...
Read moreToday was my first time eating here and I'll say right now that I will be back. This place reminds me a bit of a cozy diner.
We took my fiancé's dad here for an early birthday lunch. He was craving their calamari and onion rings and he said they hit the spot today. My fiancé got one of the daily specials (rodeo burger, I think) with sweet potato fries and I got the cheeseburger club plate with onion rings.
Come here with a big appetite, the expectation of a to go box or both! Portions here are very generous! We came home with at least half our rings and fries and I had part of my club sandwich left as well. A good portion of the calamari went into a to go box as well - that will make at least another two meals for my fiance's dad.
My burger club was very good! I wasn't given a choice on the doneness of my burger, but that wasn't a problem for me. My fiancé pronounced his burger as one of the better ones he's had in a while.
This place is very busy on Sundays and they close early (about three p.m. or so.) We did have to wait a little after we were seated for service, but that service was pretty good! Our food was as we wanted it and we got the things we asked for (cocktail sauce, extra cokes, etc.) despite our waitress running herself crazy to and from all her tables.
Prices were pretty decent for what we got (my plate was about $15.95 or so) The menu had a lot of variety - breakfast items, steaks, burgers and sandwiches, and salads. There is also a cabinet full of a variety of cakes at the front of the restaurant and they...
