I’ve driven through Kittredge countless times, passing by Blackbird Café without ever stopping—until now. When we were looking for a convenient brunch spot between Denver, Lakewood, and Evergreen, we finally decided to give it a try. Any excuse to head up to the mountains is one we’ll gladly take! Visiting on a weekday meant a more relaxed atmosphere, though I can easily imagine this cozy spot buzzing with activity on weekends. The café exudes a charming, rustic cabin feel, and its prime location along Bear Creek offers picturesque views for those lucky enough to snag a table by the window. Despite arriving as a large group without reservations, the staff quickly arranged tables for us, and we were seated in no time. Their warm hospitality set the tone, with coffee and drinks arriving swiftly as we took our time exploring the menu. There was even a cute little play area for restless kids. It was fun to see such a variety of dishes land on our table—everyone ordered something different, and each plate was as tempting as the next. The French Toast with fresh strawberries (and real maple syrup), the Chorizo Nido, and the Green Chili Smothered Burrito were particular standouts, though every bite was delicious. Now that I’ve discovered this hidden gem, I have no doubt we’ll be back soon for another leisurely brunch in the mountains.

About an hour wait at 1 pm for lunch on a Saturday, original estimate was 35 minutes for first available. The patio outside is cute, there’s a creek. The host was a very stand-offish man who stood silently and looked at people like Why are you here. I was confused and asked if this is a restaurant since hosts are welcoming, he sighed and said yes. He wiped down our table after an hour of us waiting, which was very lazily and a bunch of food debris from the last group remained on the table and chairs that we just brushed off ourselves in order to not have old food fly onto our plate or sit on it as well as create a more appetizing experience for ourselves. The waiter was fine. The food came out at a reasonable time. The green chile bison burger was fine; it tasted good but was bland to me. The sweet potatoes were good. The shrimp po boy was good. Because it’s outside, there’s nature so bees kept trying to land in my food while I was eating it. To me, this place is fine but not worth the hour wait or $25 for an adequate burger without even average hospitality.

My wife and I ordered the traditional breakfast. The eggs were supposed to be over easy and the eggs were served half clear with runny whites and that was gross. The potato cakes were cold and crusty hard. The pancakes were great. My wifes eggs were cooked fine but her order of potato cakes were also hard and cold. We have been coming to this Cafe for family breakfasts for the past two owners and have had excellent luck with the food. Today we arrived first thing at 8:00 am with a party of four and spent just under a hundred dollars altogether. This was a good amount of money for breakfast, but would have been worth it, only if it have been better than we could have cooked at home. The waiter was polite and as he placed the food down at the tables he asked if everything looked right and left to only come back to drop off the bill. We asked for a box to take home most of our meals to our beagle who was happy to finish it for us. I think anybody would have been disappointed in the quality of the food. I would probably return at some point just because of the history with our family coming here.

Follow up: After the response from the owner. We understand justifying your customers not complaining about the food and the service. We did have a responsibility to speak up, even for a breakfast meal. We were simply trying to enjoy the experience rather than complaining. As a group of four upon opening with only two tables including ours we arrived at the assumption that this was the quality of food served and the management also justified that quality. If I owned a restaurant, I think I would have taken more pride of my business, described as simply delicious and challenged my customers back to ensure the experience meets my expectations as a owner and my team learns to be consistent when serving my customers. Anything lost can be found again except for time wasted. And one hundred...

This place was only okay unfortunately. I had very high hopes and I'm giving 3 stars because the staff was nice and their atmosphere was pleasant. Parking was a nightmare, there were tons of cars parked on the other side of the street by signs that said that unauthorized vehicles would be towed and being in a rental car we decided we couldn't chance parking there and there was no sign from the restaurant saying it was okay to park there. After circling we finally got a spot in their lot (which desperately needs to be paved). We finally got put onto the list with a 55 minute wait. We sat around and waited and we saw other people walking around back and carrying drinks. The hosts really should've let us know we could've waited in the back area by the creek and that we could've gone inside for drinks while we waited. We ended up waiting over 70 minutes for our table. The service from our waiter was fine but the food wasn't that great. I had the salmon burger special and it's consistency was very similar to canned tuna that had been loosely shaped into a patty. Both my meal and my husband's ended up upsetting our stomachs later that afternoon. I was very disappointed that we waited for so long only to have the food not be great. I would recommend getting some signage across the street if possible letting people know they won't get towed for parking there and have some signage by the front host stand informing people they can head inside for a drink or out to the creek area to wait since maybe people visiting are not locals...

I just had a horrible experience there including the food and the service. I wanted to try it out after the remodel and new ownership. I ordered the Prime Rib and asked the waitress to be sure that it had been prepared that day. She assured me that it was. When it came, the dish looked like something out of a Furrs cafeteria; shredded prime rib on a long bun, fries and a bowl of au jus; no garnish, nothing. And when I bit into the Prime Rim, it was cold in the middle! The waffle fries were good but I will not go back. And to top things off I was sitting there after eating and finishing my drink, watching the stream, when the waitress came up and said, "Are you ready?" I asked "Ready for what?" She said to pay the bill!! Yea, I was ready to get out of there for sure. Of course the restaurant was empty except for me and one other table where I overheard the patrons indulge the waitress because they had asked for a substitution for something earlier and she said yes they could substitute but then she added it on their tab. She eventually took it back off and apologized. The wait staff were all down at the kitchen pickup talking with each other and there was no one to greet the guests. And $13 for a 6 ounce piece of shredded cold prime rib on a commercial bun is not worth it. Obviously, a lot of people agree with me. You only get one chance to make a...
