My wife was raised outside of Columbus and she and her family introduced me to it nearly 30 years ago. A visit to Columbus is not complete without a trip there. My daughters love it, too.
The service is always terrific, the atmosphere is family oriented, the plates are simple and delicious and anything that's not fresh was designed to survive the hot, humid Mississippi weather.
Go here if: you're open minded and want something that's not like every other Mexican restaurant in America, you're interested in authentic food, not standard American Tex-Mex, you're not picky about everything under the sun... The Mexican Kitchen does things THEIR way (it's NOT glorified Taco Bell... it's REAL) and it's been good enough for the fine people of Lowndes and surrounding counties for 58 years (I can attest to having eaten there for 29 of those). If you walk in with a pre-conceived notion of how everything should be based on past experiences at your local Panco Villa Restaurant, you'll be in for a disappointment. The Mexican Kitchen is unique and it is simply one of the best restaurants in Columbus (period, no qualifier needed) and Columbus has a few VERY good restaurants. And I've never seen cheesy chicken on the menu! Thank goodness!
P.S. My go-to is the medium plate. Delicious. I hope they outlast me. I love eating there when...
Read moreIf what you are looking for is a scary experience, visit this restaurant. The decor is creepy, completely unrelated to what real Mexico looks like, between charros hats, dolls, and weird lights hanging from the center pols. It is dark every where you look. The service is terrible, waiter and waitress don't even recognize a new customer when comes through the doors and don't know how to answer questions about the menu. If by now you still decide to adventure by trying the food, good luck because there is some sort of vinaigrette welcoming you in the center of the table-only God knows for how long it has been sitting there- served not with chips-or better to say with some taco shells. The chicken tacos and the meat enchiladas are disgusting and with a deplorable presentation. No excuses, here you'll never see a vegetable floating on any side of the plate! Don't care if the owner's mother left the recipes, they are probably misread because the cook (if there is one) is not Mexican, and even if he was, it a disgrace for the REAL Mexican food. This is too expensive for eating and is NOT GOOD...
Read moreI have never been so wonderfully surprised by a restaurant, it’s food, and it’s staff. ❤️ A couple of my girlfriends and I stopped in this evening for our Mexican food fix, and everything about our meal was absolutely delightful. It was our very first visit (of many to come), so our server let us know that the cuisine is not texmex but more traditional Mexican food. To begin: the rice was the most flavorful rice I have ever had. Everything on their standard plates is so delicious I couldn’t help but to completely clear mine, and both of my girlfriends demolished theirs as well. The hand rolled tamales were made with love and so many years of experience. The 🧡HOT SAUCE🧡 is homemade and so so so delicious. I think I tried it on everything on my plate, and it was an excellent addition to all of it. I literally cannot speak enough praise about this place and the family that owns it. If you are in Columbus, MS, I highly recommend...
