I don't know how the bread or cake is at Phu's Bakery, as I only came here to indulge on the egg tarts and Portuguese tarts. My parents made it known to me that egg tarts are extremely cheap here - like so cheap that you have to give it a try yourself.
The bakery is not too big, located in a decently-sized shopping mall. There's a good amount of parking, so you don't have to worry about that. Sometimes the egg tarts do sell out for the day, so I would advise to come earlier if you're in the mood for these treats.
Egg tarts are $0.95 each - a steal when lots of other bakeries are slowly raising the prices of egg tarts to almost $1.50. I don't think they have the flaky crust (not that I saw), but only the cookie crust - I still thought it was pretty good. The crust was not too sweet and the filling of the egg tart was pretty filling. The egg tart itself was light and creamy, almost as if it was whipped to be extra light. I liked that the filling was not too sweet either. I don't think it's the best egg tart I've had, but for the price - I definitely wouldn't mind coming back and getting a few more.
As for the Portuguese egg tarts - I almost don't want to write about it in fear that the prices will start to rise once other people take notice. But I also want to give this shop the recognition it deserves! For $1.00 each, that is a BIG steal and win in my book. I've seen some places mark these up at around $3 each! I thought the top could have been a little more burnt and a tad bit sweeter, but the filling was just as light and delicious as it tasted in the egg tart itself. The crust of these tarts were flaky, which I appreciated - not the best flaky I have had, but they were good.
tl;dr - highly recommend checking this bakery out if you're a fan of cheap but good pastries - especially the egg tarts and Portuguese tarts! Come earlier to get them as they come right out...
Read moreOne of the best bakeries in SGV for Paste De Nata (Portuguese egg tart). So far I found this place has the flavor and taste that’s closest to the ones made in Macau.
The egg tart has the flakiest shell with creamy and soft custard filling. I can probably eat 10 of them without stopping. They are so delicious. I brought a box of a dozen to a Christmas this Saturday, they were an instant hit.
Besides egg tarts, the bakery has excellent Chinese bake goods such as paper sponge cakes, Walnut cookies, Bolo Bun, and other goodies.
I found out that they also do custom made birthday and wedding cakes. I browsed their book and saw that they have pretty good cake designs.
This is a small bakery and they are still in COVID locked down mode. You can only see the bake goods through their windows and order through a small window. The service was not too good either. I would have given them a five stars if they were more friendly. The girl took our order seemed to be very unhappy. She didn’t want to answer any of...
Read moreI'm a huge fan of Portuguese egg tarts, and I was excited to try Phu's Bakery after seeing positive reviews. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with my experience.
The egg tarts were soggy and not flavorful, and the packaging was poor. I've had much better egg tarts at Jim's Bakery.
The other baked goods were decent, but they weren't anything special. The bread was tasty, but it didn't have much filling. I would recommend Oh My Pan Bakery to anyone looking for a great Chinese bakery goods.
I know this review might sound harsh, but I wanted to share my honest feedback. I'm hoping that the bakery will improve its quality control and packaging...
