I’ve had lots of these cakes over the years from other locations so was disappointed to find that whoever made this used tinted whipped cream to make the roses! They could not hold shape, were foamy and unrefined shapeless blobs that were of course smashed against the inside of the box. Roses should be made from buttercream frosting so they are crisp/clean looking. They hold their shape well, especially when frozen. The really odd thing was that the green leaves and white piping were buttercream as they should be, yet the roses were not.
The main cake frosting was always done using soft serve ice cream in the past because it’s spreadable, freezes smooth and hard, and is a perfect base for the other decorating elements to be applied on top, such as the roses, piping, etc. But on this cake, it was just more porous/hole-y looking whipped cream. Whipped cream has no place anywhere on this cake. It doesn’t firm up even when frozen and by comparison has a warm mouthfeel instead of being ice cold like the rest of the cake. The temperature difference ruins it taste-wise.
Also, the buttercream layer between the cake layer and ice cream layer was completely missing, so the ice cream was just sitting directly on top of the cake with nothing in between to hold it together. When the cake is sliced and put onto a plate, it separates due to no buttercream layer to “glue” the other layers together. Frosting between layers is cake decorating 101.
For $56 ($53 after promo code) for a 9” round cake, I feel a bit shortchanged especially due to the lack of buttercream used. Buttercream tastes great with the cake and ice cream but there was barely any to be had. Buttercream is the taste I’m accustomed to on BR cakes. There has never once been whipped cream on any of the cakes I’ve gotten until today. I see it as kind of a cheap cop out to using buttercream.
Look at the difference in the photo of the white piping and the green leaves, which look better since they are buttercream. Compare those to the roses that are deflating whipped cream (along with the top of the cake itself).
I know this store hasn’t been open long and another reviewer said staff is learning and trying really hard. I hope so and I hope if that is the case that you might take my advice to heart for quality BR cakes as they have typically been served in the past. To recap:
Assemble cake and ice cream layers using an even/level layer of buttercream (usually about 1/4” thick) in between as it’s the “glue” that holds it together, adds flavor and makes it looks nice. It’s basic cake decorating.
No whipped cream anywhere on cakes (unless it’s a special request). Cake should be frosted with soft serve and frozen before decorating.
When decorating: Roses, balloons, flowers of other types, leaves, all piping, trims and handwriting should be done in butter cream.
You will have amazing looking and tastier cakes plus much happier customers if you follow those 3 easy but important steps to making cakes in the BR tradition!
I may try again to get another cake for my birthday next year but I am going to specify that it be made the way I’ve explained here. Hoping in a year staff will have been given the necessary training, will have mastered proper assembly and mistakes like trying to use whipped cream interchangeably with buttercream will be resolved. Really hoping for a better cake and experience next time! The cake and ice cream tasted good. Now if we can just correct the issues with frosting (or lack thereof).
Overall, glad to have a BR back in the area. Hoping one will reopen in Cedar Rapids. We used to have one on Center Point Rd and in or near Westdale Mall I believe, but both have been gone for many years. Thank you...
Read moreWent to store the first time and ordered on the app when going to the store they didn’t have the marshmallow topping, but it let me order second time. They didn’t have one of the smoothies and some of the toppings and they still let me order on the app third time they also didn’t have some of the supplies and the app still let me order the fourth time I ordered on the app again and the app let me order when the store was closed when I got to the store they had just closed and the guy inside said we would have to come back the next day. They didn’t want to give me my money and now I’m waiting two business days for someone to call me back from corporate. I think it is unfair that I had to experience this because when I have ordered on other apps, such as Starbucks, scooters or any other restaurants , when the store is closed, it says store is currently closed and it doesn’t let me order yet. They let me order when the store was closed. Also, when I have ordered that other apps for restaurants when they don’t have an item, it says currently unavailable, but yet again, Baskin-Robbins let me order even though they didn’t have the items on their app , this was not my mistake. It was theirs and they need to fix this. The ice cream is good but I don’t think I’m going to be going back there again just because they have really bad customer service and their app is horrible. Also, online I googled Baskin-Robbins the next day and look for the number and when I call the number it’s an oil company so you can’t even get to the actual store because it has the incorrect number on Google when I called customer service at the end of the call the man hung up on me. This is not OK , customer service is priority and the customer is...
Read moreI recently visited the Baskin Robbins in Coralville and had a wonderful experience tasting their chocolate milkshake—it was truly delightful! The flavor was rich and perfectly creamy, exactly what you’d hope for in a classic milkshake.
However, I did notice a couple of areas that could enhance the overall customer experience. The wait time was a bit longer than expected, likely because there was only one employee handling the afternoon rush. A little extra help during peak times might smooth things out. Also, while the ambiance was typical of a bustling ice cream shop, a bit more attention to cleanliness could really make the place shine.
Regarding pricing, at $7.89 for a medium milkshake, it feels a tad steep, especially for regular visits. While the quality is undeniable, a slight adjustment in price could make these delicious treats more accessible more often.
Despite these points, I genuinely enjoyed my visit and the milkshake was a standout. I'll definitely be back for more flavors—hopefully to find shorter lines and the same...
