Our group of seven went here on a Friday morning primarily because it was really close to the house we were renting. We asked for outside dining and were quickly seated. Our server quickly took our drink and food order.
I won’t bother posting pictures because we had relatively standard breakfast fare— eggs, fried potatoes, breakfast meats, pancakes, and toast/biscuits. The food arrived in a relatively short wait and here’s the highlights of our experience.
Almost everyone ordered eggs, so thankfully, they were all prepared properly. Nothing worse than an underdone egg white.
The breakfast meats—sausage and bacon—were well prepared and of good quality.
The short stack of pancakes consisted of two quite large pancakes. Taste of the batter was nothing special and the syrup was all the small prepackaged containers.
The home fried potatoes were pre-boiled potatoes that were fried when ordered. Since they use small potatoes cut into large hunks, you don’t really get a lot of fried edges because there’s not many flat surfaces. I’m sure a lot of people like their potatoes that way, but to me they were just okay.
The only real disappointment of the breakfast was the biscuit. They were large square biscuits that look pretty good ; however, they arrived at the table barely lukewarm and when you get inside, they were pretty dry (over-baked).
When you’re in a beach town, you know your options tend to be limited. So overall, this was a recently good breakfast, but...
Read moreI struggled over giving a 4 or 5, but I had to differentiate between a perfect experience and a slightly uncomfortable one even though we had some responsibility in the situation. We were meeting friends for breakfast and bring the last day of our trip, we had our massive dog with us, so we came here because they had a deck as well as good ratings. We arrived before our friends and there were a few people waiting on the porch. My wife went in to see the hostess while I held onto our dog behind everyone. My wife told the hostess we had a dog and needed a patio table. She was told if a table is open, grab it. My wife came out, motioned for me to bring the dog and we went to the one open table, which was fully in the sun. We are sun-restricted and of course our dog needs shade and water. It took several minutes before the server came over and asked if we had talked to hostess. We said yes and then waited several more minutes before she came back with 2 menus and left before we could tell her we had 2 more coming. When she came back with water we told her and were told we couldn't move to a shaded table because another server had that table and that our friends would have to sit elsewhere because we shouldn't have been seated before they got there. Even people at other tables were shocked at that. In the end we Did all get to sit together and got moved to a shaded table; the server stayed with us and did well; the food was great and we...
Read moreFirst Light in Corolla caught our eye for a vacation breakfast, promising a comforting start to the day with its menu of classic breakfast offerings. As someone seeking that familiar, hearty style of breakfast, it initially seemed like a good fit.
However, my experience was a bit of a mixed bag. While the menu leans heavily into comfort food, those with dietary restrictions, specifically gluten-free needs, will find very limited options. The only accommodation offered was to simply omit bread or biscuits from egg-based dishes, which felt a bit restrictive.
Speaking of egg-based dishes, I opted for scrambled eggs and was quite disappointed. They had an off-putting texture and flavor, tasting either overcooked or, surprisingly, even microwaved. This was a significant letdown, as scrambled eggs are a breakfast staple. I did enjoy the bacon, and the breakfast potatoes were good.
On the brighter side, the coffee was quite good and provided a much-needed boost. The service was also prompt and friendly, which always enhances a dining experience. My husband, thankfully, enjoyed his meal of corned beef and hash.
In summary, First Light offers a cozy, comfort-food atmosphere, and if you're looking for a straightforward, traditional breakfast without dietary concerns, it might hit the spot. However, for those needing gluten-free options or expecting perfectly cooked eggs, it might be worth exploring other breakfast...
