I saw the good rating and decided to check this place out before heading back to Houston. Was pleasantly surprised with the amount of parking and cars when we arrived. The menus were located at the "back" of the restaurant from the parking lot instead of the door off the street, which was confusing at first, but not hard to figure out.
The restaurant itself was a little warm inside but very clean. The staff was mostly friendly. However, quite a few of them could have used some smiles. You order at the counter just past the pastry case, which is filled with some of the most delightful looking treats. I ordered a coffee cake muffin, and my gf ordered a pecan praline type brownie, and unfortunately, both wish we had stopped at the pastries after having our breakfast.
I ordered their Saturday special, which was biscuits and gravy, topped with scrambled eggs and cheese, served with roasted red potatoes. She ordered their Blue Jack, which is a blue crab cake on top of a slice of toasted sourdough with poached eggs and their hollandaise sauce. I want to start by saying the portion sizes were more than enough. Neither type of egg was overdone. The crab cake was a great size with plenty of crab, and I really appreciated that there was sausage in the gravy. Also, the prices were actually pretty darn reasonable. However, the gravy itself was odd. It was not a milk base and was too runny for me to call it a gravy. Otherwise, the overall flavor of the biscuits and gravy was quite nice. The huge letdown came from the Blue Jack. The crab cake, while done well, was incredibly bland and extremely disappointing. The hollandaise was the same. Zero flavor whatsoever. The only winning part of the dish was the sourdough. One word would be perfect.
Finally, they are extremely proud of their coffee, and I don't mean that in a good way. The morning was already warm, so we decided to get two of their mocha "frappes" at 6.75 a piece. What we got was basically a chocolate milkshake. I went to see what a couple of double espresso would cost and was told 8 dollars. So 21 dollars for two 20oz coffee drinks is outrageous, especially since I only had to order the extra coffee because the original had basically none.
Long review short, stick with...

If you are military, you will understand what this phrase SNAFU means. I ordered a coffee, a glass of orange juice and a Monte Christo sandwich. My husband had the same sandwich and a hot chocolate. Alright, the orange juice is $2.50 a glass. No problem. However, the glass came only 3/4 of the way full. I asked the waitress, “Could you add a little more?” I figured it was a mistake at first. The girl says, "We are told we can only fill it to the line." Patrons are stacking up behind me so I say, "whatever, fine". I pay over $20 bucks for our breakfast. I come back to the counter while I am waiting for our food to return the OJ. I let the manager know, “For $2.50 you can go to any store and buy a half gallon of OJ. So here you ARE overcharging people, and you got the nerve to not even fill up the glass? Then even better, you put a lid on the container, as if the liquid could spill over? Really!” The manager says, "I can't control the prices at the supermarket". I was livid (forgot to tell the owner about his manger during our visit). Later the owner comes over. He explains its fresh squeezed orange juice. I ask for the menu. He brings it over. I look at the list. Milk, Hot chocolate, OJ, Coffee. OJ is the highest priced item in the list and NO mention of fresh squeezed anywhere. The owner realizes it was not advertised properly. He insists its fresh squeezed and states he just had his menu redone. With this in mind, okay. I do understand why it’s a premium price for a very restrictive quantity. After the owner’s clarification, I felt much better. I didn't feel as if they were taking tourists for a bunch of suckers. I give the owner a lot of credit to come over and speak to us knowing I was very upset. For that, I respect him and I will give him a good review. The Monte Christos were tasty. Fluffy bread, melted cheese, good size, etc. Hopefully, a sign will say Fresh squeezed that will explain the higher cost and strict adherence to a restrictive quantity...
Read moreNow this is a cafe. Part of me wishes I lived in Corpus just so I could keep coming back here to try out the rest of the menu. I can definitely see myself chilling here on a workday, sipping on a coffee while trying their excellent pastries and desserts. In terms of food, I’m not sure the menu has any bad items, we loved everything we tried.
The Cheddar Bacon Scone was crumbly and salty, with chewy pieces of bacon layered throughout.
The Key Lime Pie was rich but sour. Every piece blended well together between the graham cracker crust, thick key lime filling, and a light and airy whipped cream top.
The Tropical Storm Smoothie was fruity and refreshing, you could distinctly taste each of the ingredients blending together.
The Blue Sky was a perfect vegetarian burger. Fresh but still satisfying with all the classic toppings while not being too heavy.
The “Anita” O’Day was probably our low of the meal, I would have loved the spinach to be sautéed rather than raw, and the corn and bean salsa was really just loose corn and beans put on top. That being said, the eggs and toast were perfectly cooked, still making for a satisfying meal.
Hester’s “Griddle Toast” was a major win. The pieces were ridiculously thick and fluffy and absolutely drenched in the cinnamon egg coating. Very comforting for a brunch.
The Monterey Quiche was simple and tasty, well cooked with lots of ham throughout. The crust was flaky, although a little dry.
The Chicken Tortilla soup was warm, rich, and spicy. The chicken and beans were all tender, but I would have like some tortilla strips or something crunchy to compliment it.
The Devonshire Quiche was equally as good. The tomatoes were a welcome compliment to the rich ricotta cheese.
Overall, the price to food quality here is fantastic. Everything is fresh and made with incredible thought and care. We found the staff to be friendly and welcoming and the restaurant had a relaxed and casual atmosphere. I would definitely...
