My wife and I have never been to Corpus Christi, so we were looking for a nice high end steak house and Katz 21 looked like it would fit the bill. Upon arrival the place looked like it might have been a cheap nightclub in a former life, which put us off a bit. However we hoped for the best anyway. Upon entering we found the atmosphere to be fine, sort of cheapy old English, and a very nice gentleman in a suit met us, was quite professional, and asked if we wanted to sit in the bar area where some live music was, or in the main dining area. We thought the live music sounded fun, so he led us to a booth in the bar area. We noticed right away that everything just feels a bit old and cheap. As though the owners are all about cutting as many corners as possible, and unfortunately our perception was correct. A waitress came over to the table with water, was quite friendly, and asked if we wanted drinks. I ordered one and my wife was looking and so the waitress said she would come back. About 6 minutes later another waitress came with my drink, then asked to take my wife's drink order. Which of course was weird cause now I have my drink and my wife doesn't have hers. I asked the new waitress if she was going to be our waitress and she said yes with no explanation for the change. We split the filet mignon (medium rare) with whipped potatoes and glaised carrots, and none of it was awesome and the steak was chewy and tasted cheap. My drink was this blueberry martini and it was tiny but good. My wife got a ranch water and it was great. All in all, the wait staff seemed young and inexperienced, the food was sub-par, and everything was overpriced. Lastly, the musician playing in the bar was a single guy with questionable skill and the music was too loud to talk comfortably. The whole place just reeks of needing to be invested in, and it reminds of me of a nice rent house owned by a cheapskate who won't pay to do things right. If there is any chance for this restaurant to impress anyone, the leadership needs to adopt the philosophy, "That's not good enough." We won't...
Read moreThe service was perfection. Andy, David and Danny by far were extraordinary. If it wasn’t for them this review would have been a 1 star. Let’s start with the appetizer. This was the smallest crab cake I have ever ordered in my 45 years of life. Don’t get me wrong the flavor was amazing but nit worth the price tag. The salad was ok. Not great, not bad, but ok. Let’s move on to the soup. Katz is known for their lobster bisque. They decided to substitute it with an inferior shrimp bisque. 24 hours later I’m still trying to understand why. The shrimp bisque was mediocre. Both my swinger and wife passed on it after one taste. As for the entree, we all ordered the filet and lobster tail combo. This was the best part of the meal. The filet was cooked to perfection. The lobster tail was perfect. Loving on to the dessert. We had it packed to go. We did not eat it at the restaurant. After arriving home the dessert was horrific. Something you would get from 2 day old HEB dessert. I forgot to state we only had two options. Key lime pie and chocolate cake. Which honestly neither is appealing to me. Some of the best desserts Katz is known for they neglected to put on the menu. I cannot assume anything so i will leave my opinion out on why they would make that decision. I understand this review may seem negative. But I would like everyone to know this is a wonderful restaurant. Please do not take this review as a judgement. I have had wonderful meals and memories at this restaurant. They just happened to miss the point on this last occasion. Once again I would like to state the service was impeccable. By far A+. They have some of the greatest staff I have ever encountered. But for me this last occasion the food was unacceptable for the price we paid. And for anyone that would like to know my tab was +$700 for a party of 3 on New Years Eve. This is why I have written...
