Update: What a waste of time and gas. So much for giving this place a second shot. Google says they close at 7 p.m., as well as the print on their front door. Its now 5:15 pm and I drove across town from the island, for there to be a handwritten sign on the door that says pre-order pick up only, and they're closed. Never again!
The cupcakes here are AMAZING. ZERO doubt about that. Today, however, there was a hispanic woman working the counter whom I've never seen here before. I walked up, placed my order, and went to pay with cash when she LOUDLY responded "UHH, WE ARENT TAKING CASH.." Embarrassed, I quickly grabbed my card and proceeded to pay, but as I fumbled to get my card out of my wallet, she then said "IF CASH IS ALL YOU HAVE THEN I GUESS.." No signs were posted stating no cash was being accepted, and then the policy was conveniently changed in the moment? Hmmm.. okay. Wont be returning here til they get it together. However, it was disappointing that the staff couldn't accommodate customization requests like writing on the cake board. I understand that the locations are owned by different people and they set their own rules but very odd to me as it was a simple request and they have the frosting and tools for it.
Nonetheless, opting for a plain cake and cupcakes allowed us to personalize it ourselves, which turned out wonderfully. If you're not much of a baker, decorating it yourself is a viable option.
For those curious about our decoration details, we used black fondant and star cutouts for the stars, purchased a Vader head, mini lightsabers, and candle on Amazon, and sprinkles...

In recent years we only go occasionally, but we are still in love with their amazingly soft and moist cakes and all the fun flavors. Everytime we want cake, smallcakes is the first place that comes to mind. My absolute favorite was the blueberry lemon. My husband's favorite was the Boston cream pie. They are huge and delicious. Lately they've been selling mini bite sized ones and those are so great too, the perfect quick snack. They even have puppy cakes...
