Trendy. That's probably the best word to describe this place. Very small, no table service, and cutesy decor. There's nothing wrong with any of those things as long as the place can deliver the goods. The menu is on the wall when you first walk in and it has to be the most cumbersome design I've ever seen just to order breakfast that raised more questions than answers. I was just looking for a stack of pancakes. They told me "those are dippers". I asked "dollar pancakes?" They said you can get as many as you want. Looking at the prices I was afraid to just start ordering everything Ala carte. So I settled for a classic breakfast that didn't even have pancakes, but I replaced the biscuits and gravy with pancakes. I told them I wanted sausage for the meat and potatoes instead of fruit. What I got was two tiny pancakes, two eggs, a rubbery piece of sausage, and two small potatoes. The potatoes are not home fries or hash browns. They are little baked potatoes the size of a child's fist. Who does that? The sausage as I said had a rubbery consistency but tasted OK at best. The pancakes were about double the size of a typical dollar pancake which neither made good "dippers" or a proper 8 inch size pancake. Then there is the price which is way way too high for what you get. For me, my wife and kid it cost us 36 bucks! For Breakfast that was entirely too small! Knock about 8 to 10 bucks off of that for us to go to Cracker Barrel or Bob Evans and get more food and way more variety. Is the quality there to justify the high cost? I don't think so obviously. The orange juice is legit real orange juice. It is obviously freshly squeezed with no additives and to be honest I'd rather have the concentrated stuff, but that's personal preference.
So what can I tell you in short? If you're really hungry don't go there. If you like small food and friendly staff that will empty out your pocket book just for breakfast then this...
Read moreThis place seems like a really nice concept, and judging from the overwhelmingly positive reviews we must have chosen an off day to try it out for carry-out.
The good: The eggs were perfectly cooked -- just awesome. Gorgeous ciabatta. Our little one had a grilled cheese and loved it. I like that they're cooking from scratch with local ingredients.
The not-so-great: the potatoes were beautiful but cried out for any kind of seasoning. The biscuits were tough like they'd been reheated. The sausage was lean (turkey?) and spiced like chorizo, which made for a strange addition to a traditional breakfast plate and was even weirder on my partner's slinger sandwich.
The bad: the gravy had obviously burned to the bottom of the pot and should not have been served. The drip coffee was warmed over and just plain awful.
Overall this felt more like a step sideways from a chain diner than a step up, which isn't OK at upscale prices.
Edit to follow up to the owner's response: I really appreciate Mary taking the time to respond to me personally. In case I didn't say it loud enough, you should go to this restaurant! Most folks like it! Times are tough, small businesses are the backbone of our community, and one person's experience doesn't define reality. I'm not going to accept any kind of refund because I don't do that. But we ate our meal within 2 minutes of taking it away and our experience was...
Read moreThere’s no hope for good service for any restaurant along Watson in the Webster Groves/Crestwood area. People running the front of the house need to learn about quick wins and not make customers wait to get their food for 10 minutes when it has been cooked and paid for and is just sitting in a warmer on the other side of the counter. Just get it out and hand it over. It literally takes 10 seconds not 10 minutes.
Oh and you know what the kicker is? You get home and are missing half your order. Yolklore is another place on the list of restaurants on Watson that are terrible at what they do. Beginning to think it’s the residents that work at these places but management needs to make sure these bad workers are meeting their standards.
With another place on my blacklist it further confirms that restaurants are not the best option. Time to go to the grocery store and do it myself. At least that way it would be 17% of the price you have to pay here. 1 sausage patty 0.68. 1 egg 0.25. 2 small pancakes maybe 0.75-1.00. I’ll be generous and say $2.50 with tax. Dipper sandwich from here with no potatoes or syrup since they didn’t give them to you… $14.51. Actually I’m still hungry. Maybe I’ll go make one of my...
