It all started with a Tater Tot.
I was taking my mom out to dinner and discovered that our chosen spot was closed. So, I pulled out my phone and typed "burger near me" into Google. That’s when Herby’s came up—a place I had no idea existed.
We headed up the street in Oak Cliff to this little Elmwood joint.
The young lady behind the counter was friendly, and I knew we had found a good place based on their small, specialized menu—burgers were the main feature. We ordered two burgers: a single for mom, a double for me, with fries and tater tots.
We grabbed drinks from a stand-up cold cabinet and sat down. A few minutes later, our food came out, and you could see the crisp on the tots and fries.
I took a bite of the still-warm tot, and CRUNCH. At that moment, they had me. It was a perfectly cooked tot—crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, with just the right seasoning.
Now, I’m no easy mark in the burger game. I’ve been to the best—and the so-called best—locally and beyond. So, when I tried this Smash Burger, just like the tots, I knew I had something special. Great meat, great bun, great pickle, and onion. It was simple perfection, and I devoured it like a creature from one of the fantasy books I’ve written.
And just like that, it was gone. I looked at my fingers, already missing the taste and texture.
Herby’s is everything you want in a local hole-in-the-wall: clean, friendly, with a great vibe—and above all, great food.
God bless them, for they are my new go-to burger place in my hood.

Read moreBest, tastiest smash burgers you're going to want more of. Sober and Jake Saenz really know how to whip up something that'll make you scratch, sniff and salivate for more.
Seriously. The food is bomb. The burgers are bombs of pure comfort with grilled onions, melted cheese and addicting mayo sauce. I'm waiting for that mayo sauce to be packaged on shelves. Jake's Kitchen is a fountain of culinary comfort wizardry.
And eating a reasonably priced, hand-crafted smashburger is even better when then scenery is one big giant chef's kiss. Herby's looks like the set of movie with thoughtful, nostalgic trinkets, signed posters and authentic pieces of Oak Cliff history.
Plus the jukebox.
The jukebox is one of the best curated jukes in town. For a few bucks, you can turn the place out with New Order or classic Sade jams. If you're a business owner take note: a well-curated music selection is such an overlooked necessity especially in Dallas. Herby's has it on lock.
Aside from becoming one of the best spots in town to get a smashburger, Herby's is quickly becoming a community staple. They host a wide-range of events that bring everyone together: from inspiring Art Talks with NYT Best Selling Illustrator Arturo Torres to chill selector's nights with the some of the city's most beloved DJs.

Read moreFood is ok, but horrible Customer Service. It was my first time (and last) trying this place, I decided to support a local Business, When I got there, they were not busy. One person started helping me out and on the middle of the order someone else to go over I ordered three burgers and three french fries. After waiting a few minutes, they gave me a bag with three boxes, but one of the boxes seems small to me, so I ask if it was three burgers in there. The last person that took my order was the same one that gave me the burgers and said yes. So I left. Once I got home and open the bag, it was two burgers and fries and a small fries on the small box. I called right away to let them know the mistake that happened so that they would be aware. The same person that gave me, my burgers, answered the phone. She was so rude, When I started explaining what had happened, she started arguing with me about me making the wrong order, And then proceeded to tell me well what do you want me to do about it?. All I said was To put attention when someone orders food. Because I was home with my two kids And not enough food. I asked if it was three burgers before I left. She could have told me no there’s only two and I would have ordered an extra one. Not create an issue at someone’s home during dinner time. Just ruined...
