Nate, you brilliant, beautiful man... your smoked meat has changed our lives. The other day, we drove by thinking you closed at 9 and things looked pretty dark around 8:30 or so... my husband and I had a moment of panic, thinking you had closed for good. But no... you're still there, making amazing Texas barbecue, tempting us with your macaroni and cheese and sweet-savory baked beans. Our favorites include the brisket (obviously), pork ribs, and turkey leg, although I don't know if he's still doing turkey legs. It might be a seasonal thing. Others are correct, the prices are a little high, but you won't regret splurging if you decide to visit Nate's. If it's your first visit, it might be a little tricky to see, since it's a small shop in a small strip of shops. It's smoked with oak so it has that bitter bite associated with Oak and the meat flavoring isn't pleasant as it would be with Hickory, Pecan, etc. The rub is heavily whole grain peppery, not appealing to me personally. The sausage when I ordered it had been cooked/heated for too long because the casing was hard to the bite and the actual sausage was mushy, associated with overcooking a meat. The Mac and cheese was dry and served like a casserole as opppsed to actual shells in cheese sauce. The beans however, had a good flavor to them.
Myself and my spouse both felt the same about the food, and unfortunately we won't be going back despite the "pop up convenience". The guy himself is friendly but unfortunately the food isn't to par with our expectation of true BBQ. I'm glad to see a small business like this thriving during COVID, so he's gotta be doing...
Read moreOh my goodness... rib tips, brisket and sausage....ALL DELICIOUS. The brisket is moist (y'all, don't get lean...silly silly, its brisket, get it moist) the rib tips had fantastic flavor, I just love all the work of them. The sausage is also super tasty!! You can smell that it is going to be good when you pull in--whatever wood he is using, smells perfect with the smell of the meat.
Side dishes.... There is brisket in the beans, the mac and cheese is super delicious!!! I'm not wild about potato salad in general, but this was cold and fresh.
The fact that he has been less than a mile from my house lately, is dangerous...cuz his stuff is truly delicious. He has a well oiled machine going on there. Plus he plays good music while you wait.
