Old 97 Tavern — Restaurant in Danville

Ok, I have visited 4 times before leaving a review. Twice during the day before 2pm and twice after 6. In my opinion, the service and food that you receive during different times is like night and day.

In the day time for both visits, we sat at the bar and Nikki was our server. She was great and can make a nice Old fashioned. We tried the salmon BLT, egg rolls, fish & chips, and had a few drinks. Second time we had the egg rolls again, along with the fried green tomatoes and nachos. Overall the food was good.

Now for the evening time, we tried shrimp and grits and it was watery, the sauce was bland and the grits had a weird texture. The egg rolls were not as good as the first two visits and the tavern burger was just ok. The drinks were watered down and did not taste good. We tried again thinking it was an off night and ordered to go and the food just sucked. The server was ok but not as friendly and attentive.

This is my reason for 3 stars. The day time and night staff and experience should be aligned and consistent. We wanted to come after 5 to try the other food options like the salmon, steak etc but will not return in the evening time. I hope this can...

The restaurant was nice and clean, lots of tvs and music playing ( a little too loud) but over all the place was nice. The waiter was attentive, kind, kept glasses full. There were eight of us, the dishes did not come all at the same time. By the time the last person got their dish (which was a grilled cheese) everyone’s food was cold. My husband got the steak, he rarely complains but his food was cold, steak had no flavor, the butter for the potato was so cold that when he put it on his barely warm potato it just would not melt. My mom and daughter got the cheesesteak, it was bread and cheese very little meat. The brussel sprouts were not edible. My father got a burger and the bun was stale, my daughter got a grilled cheese, the cheese was not melted. The waiter did bring her a dessert to make it up to her. It was over priced for the quality of food. The shrimp for the cocktail were very small, the hush puppies were good and so were the mozzarella sticks. They had a good bourbon selection. the place and people are genuinely cool, and i would return to try more things; However, the food i had, fried pickles and fish and chips, were interesting. i did like the fried pickles, good taste truly, but the fish and chips are not that good. i suppose this is more of a burger and chicken kind of place, so i guess fried fish wasn’t the move, but it was kind of bland and crazy greasy (pictures shows where the fish sat) the texture was good though. the most disappointing thing were the garlic fries. they tasted like they weren’t blanched and were bland? like they could NOT hold salt?? i put so much salt and pepper on them and yet they just didn’t absorb any. tavern fries should be addicting, but these were not. the slaw also was sour tasting, or maybe too much vinegar? but it was very watery and not that good either. i wouldn’t mind going back for drinks and more appetisers, but no entrees for me (also the up charge in card instead if cash caught me by surprise. idk maybe im just...
