I wanted to like this place because I love Indian food and for the sake of the people of Dekalb I want them to have good Indian food. This was close but not quite it... I got the chana masala with garlic naan. I think it would be more accurate to call the chana masala "chana butter masala". I guess it may be technically correct to call their version just "chana masala" (I mean, it had chana and masala) but every dish with this name that I've ever tried has been chickpeas in a tangy tomato-based gravy with little to no cream. Theirs came swimming in the same creamy sauce used for butter chicken or butter paneer. The etymology is not my actual issue with the dish - it may not have been what I was expecting, but for what it was, it had the right flavours, and I love saucy curries. It just had way too much butter! I know it's common to drizzle a little butter/ghee over the gravy to finish, but this was like spoonfuls of butter plopped onto this dish - the resulting layer on top was thick enough that until I mixed it together, when I tried to dip my naan in the gravy, it just came out with butter. I really thought I had eaten Indian food that was too oily before, but this was another level. It would've been so good if they didn't saturate it with butter! Garlic naan (one portion is actually 2 smallish pieces) was very good. Pillowy and soft with a little char and lots of fresh garlic (not overkill, though) and cilantro, not too buttery... no complaints. The rose milk lassi was fine, but it was another case where the name was misleading. I don't think this was actually a yogurt-based lassi, just flavoured milk. I didn't care for the artificial bright pink colour, but the taste was like any standard rose-flavoured milk. The fruit jellies were actually very good and had a tropical taste that complemented the rose well. The owners were very nice and I got the sense that they are passionate about the business. The atmosphere was cozy, but using a plastic takeout container for the curry detracts from that homey feeling. There were things about the food I liked, but I just wouldn't order a curry here again if they don't cut back on the butter. If you order here, maybe you could request no extra butter...
Read moreStopped here for dinner tonight. I had the Burger Naan and my husband had the lamb biryani. We shared the butter chicken loaded fries. Everything was absolutely delicious. The owner was there and was attentive and so personable. He actually gave us some mango lassi after our meal and I might now need this in my life on a regular basis because it was just so good. The burger was placed on two pieces of flavorful naan and topped with lettuce, onion and tomato. I got the sauce on the side as I was nervous, but after trying it, ended up putting it on the sandwich. The biryani was delicious as well. The rice had the perfect blend of spices to compliment the tender lamb. The butter chicken has a sweet but yet savory impression with the most tender chicken I've ever had. This over the fries was such a good combination. The butter chicken sauce did not overpower the fries or make them soggy. They gave us extra sauce and some of their house sauce. The house sauce was one of my favorites and was delicious on fries, naan and next time it will go on the burger. We were very full and took home half the biryani and butter chicken fries but yet didn't have that weighed down feeling. I know some worry about Indian food being too spicy but that is not the case here. Everything was well blended and had great flavor; the spices complimented the food rather than overpowered it. You can increase the spiciness by asking so there is something for everyone's heat comfort level. The owner came to talk to us and told us about how he prepared the food, his background and was just a really nice guy. His wife was also there and very pleasant. I know some people don't want to be bothered by the owner or managers while eating, but it was very natural and not at all intrusive. And did I mention the mango lassi? So good. Perfect end to a meal with a rich creamy flavor without being overpowering and a great pallette cleanser. We will definitely be back often. I encourage you to try it out! The owner and his wife's passion for creating good food and their business was apparent. In a world where good customer service and experiences are becoming more and more rare, this was a refreshing change. See you soon,...
Read moreWas visiting a friend in DeKalb for the first time and he recommended the place after I commented about how the name was funny. Saw the reviews and was skeptical because the 4.9 on hundreds of reviews is really unusual. No evidence of botting. Decided I’d give it a go since I’ve been on a South Asian kick lately. Could not have been more impressed. Very interesting menu with a wide variety of south Asian and Americana inspired fusion dishes. The owner was taking the orders and was incredibly friendly and accommodating to questions about the dishes and modifications. I ordered a chicken tikka masala combo and tandoori chicken burger. Tikka masala is kind of my generic Indian dish I like to compare places to, and the burger seemed appropriate because of the name. Both were fantastic. The tikka masala is easily in my top 3 from dozens of restaurants throughout the US, and the burger was a fascinating and creative idea for a dish. It’s essentially a Big Mac style burger but with very tender tandoori meat. Amazing idea. The naan that the combo came with was also the perfect balance between fluffy and crispy. The owner stopped by a few times and we had very pleasant conversation. Easily one of the most gracious and humble small business owners I’ve interacted with in a while. Just before leaving he offered us a free sampler of a popular dessert as well. Excellent service, fantastic food, and more than reasonable prices for serving size. Despite living 2 hours away, I intend to stop by either for dine in or takeout every time I come back to visit my friend. If you are local or even live within a 40 minute radius, you owe it to yourself to try...
