I had always been under the impression that Culver’s was more expensive than the classic DQ. However, the times have changed and now pretty much everything from Culver’s, minus the kid’s meals, are actually a bit cheaper. I’m not talking about a lot, roughly 30-50 cents per item. But depending on how many people you’re feeding it could be a couple dollar difference. We hit up one of our local Culver’s restaurants (did you realize there are actually 5 locations now?) on a Friday afternoon for lunch. We both chose to go with one of the classic “ButterBurgers,” since they are their staple after all. Ryan had the double deluxe while I opted for the bacon deluxe. I can 100% tell you to save your $1 and skip the bacon, unless you’re a fan of the piddly microwave stuff. Another thing to note is that Culver’s does their toppings a bit strange. All burger’s come with mayonnaise on it, and if you’d like ketchup or mustard you need to specifically request it. If you forget when ordering, you’ll be stuck with having to go up front again to ask for the mustard at least because they often don’t have it sitting out with the other condiments. You’ll also want to stock up on napkins because these burgers are messy! The “Butterburger'' gets its name from the fact that they put a bit of melted butter on the bun while toasting it. They also use shredded lettuce and it likes to fall out. So just trust me and grab an extra napkin per person than you normally would. You can thank me later. The flavor of the burgers is good. I can’t say they are my absolute favorite but they are definitely better than most other fast food chains. As for the fries, they have the classic crinkle cut style. They are typically pretty good. Crisp outside with the soft mashed potato filling. Oftentimes they can be a bit heavy on the salt, that’s a plus for me but I know for others it can be a bit much. Now onto dessert! Custard is an interesting thing. Similar to ice cream, but oftentimes referred to being richer, smoother and creamier than its counterpart. Ryan is a big fan of custard. I, on the other hand, prefer ice cream. For me, custard is just too smooth, it doesn’t feel like there is much substance to it. Like, I put it on my spoon and instantly the stuff starts melting. Not to say I won’t eat the stuff, because come on, it’s still a tasty sugary substance that you can add more tasty sugary substances to. My personal favorite is to add the espresso syrup. I thought it would be good with the sugar cookie pieces, but after trying it this last time I’m pretty sure those are just crushed up vanilla wafers. And mine at least tasted stale. I looked online for the original recipe that I had gotten using espresso and I’m pretty sure it was the flavor of the day called “Espresso Toffee Bar.” That was absolutely delicious. 10/10 recommend if you like the flavor of cold coffee. Ryan prefers classic chocolate with a mix-in of oreos. This time I convinced him to try the dove chocolate because I was curious if it would be shavings, chunks, syrup or what. It ended up being a bit of a mixture of shavings and small chunks. It was really good but pretty rich in addition to the chocolate ice cream. I’m thinking next time he’ll go back to his original. I’d also like to mention that Culver’s has a nice atmosphere inside. It’s almost like a sitdown restaurant in the dining area. They really try to separate the dining and ordering sides so that it is a nicer experience when dining in. I’ve got to say that having kids and meeting up with family there is quite nice. You can have the standard fast food convenience of speed and being able to leave whenever but with the luxury of nicer seating and atmosphere of a sit down. So in that aspect, I’d definitely recommend Culver’s over Dairy Queen. However, if it’s just grabbing some food to-go I’m still a Dairy Queen girl hands down,...
Read more5/1/24 Update: I have discovered Culver's allows me to order a "kid's meal," which is perfect for me. As I am getting older and having stomach issues, there are times I don't eat a lot. And, since I can sub in a small drink instead of milk or apple juice, I do. And, the scoop of custard at the end satisfies my post-meal sweet tooth.
The only issues I had with today's meal was the detested brioche bun, I didn't want to pay extra to switch to something else; the large amount of ketchup I swiped and dabbed off with napkins; and the three small pickle slices lost in the ketchup and three dots of mustard.
The restaurant was orderly and the drink station was stocked with lids, straws, napkins, and seasonings. The staff was friendly and quick to take orders, and my table was clean. The store was busy, yet tables were still wiped and trash was neatly contained. I didn't use the restrooms, but I would hazard a guess they were tidy, too.
This was my first time at this Culver's. My husband was receiving service at Avera across the street, so it was very convenient.
Ordering was easy. I asked for a drink tray and received one with no problem. I was given a plastic number tent to show what order number I was. I had a few diet selections, most of which were caffeine-free and one that was non-carbonated. Thank you! My health requires me to have both those options.
Even though I was taking my order to go, I noticed the store was clean. There was a lady cleaning around the drink station, too. I received my food quickly and darted back to the hospital. Our food was good and hot. We were hungry, and I forgot to take...
