This was the first time getting cheesesteaks under the new ownership and will be the last. After seeing everyoneâs reviews that nothing had changed we decided to order from what was our fav cheesesteak place. When we got the steaks I said âwow this feels really lightâ, which made sense because there was a smear of meat on the bread and it was covered in ketchup. All you could taste was the bread and ketchup. You couldnât even tell there was meat on the bread other than seeing some brown color through the ketchup. Mikeâs used to STUFF their bread so full of steak meat that you could make another sandwich. And I didnât expect that, but I also didnât expect what we got. We were so disappointed and saddened that our favorite place to get great cheesesteaks had changed so drastically. On top of that the prices increased dramatically. I totally understand that the cost of everything has gone up and I donât mind paying for things, but $16+ for bread with ketchup and the tiniest amount of meat? No thanks.
Re to Owners response: Hi Fabio - Thanks for your response. I am not at all disputing prices went up everywhere, as you can see in my review above. I get that and appreciate that you had to raise your prices. However I did have to check your menu to ensure I wasn't crazy about the cost of our sandwiches, and I agree your cheesesteaks aren't $16. However the large is $14.99, and after adding a few toppings they quickly reach over $16 each. Again - I GET IT. Prices went up and you had to raise your prices. I am not upset about the price. What we were upset about is the lack of meat and cheese in the sandwiches FOR THAT PRICE. Maybe we got food on an off night, there are many factors that could have influenced the food that night. I do thank you for your response and will at some point give you a try again. Mike's was ALWAYS our go-to. It was always consistent. You knew what you were getting when you got food from here. We were just very disappointed with the...
Read moreI have lived in Newark a long time so I was rather surprised that I never knew Mike's Famous Steaks had quite the reputation. So I had to give it a try. Visit #1 The order- 1 large cheese steak with mushrooms and onions and 1 crab cake platter. Upon entering you get a whiff of a rather unpleasant smell. The a\c? The ducts need cleaning? I could not tell you. But it's almost like the saying when in Rome; no one seemed to notice or be bothered so I too, went about my business of picking up my order. The place is cramped and rather untidy. The decor has been around Newark longer than I have. The staff consisted of 3 older men who behave as if they are doing you a favor. Let's say they are not the friendliest. I personally don't care about these things. There are five things I want: A clean kitchen. Good Food. Reasonable prices. Consistency. Fair portions. Unfortunately the presentation of the crab cakes was so off putting the food wasn't even touched. Burned and prior to their burning, they were frozen, flat patties. However, the cheese steak was OMG good! It was packed full of steak. (Since the crab cakes went into the trash, I had to share.) Visit #2 The order-1med chicken cheese steak with mushrooms & 1med cheese steak. (We were staying away from the crab cakes. ) The same french-like concierge staff was working with the same set up as the first visit, smell and all. At home as we began eating we noticed a huge difference in size between the chicken cheese steak and the other, one was so much smaller. Huh? I once again got the great food. The OMG good chicken cheese steak! My friend got the little cheese steak, so damn if I didn't have to share again. How do you rate a...
Read moreThe other night, one of the YouTube food reviewers that I'm subscribed to, named JL Jupiter recently stopped in Delaware and tried 2 subs from Mike's Famous Steaks in Newark and gave it a positive review. He got a cheese steak and turkey sub.. I had never heard of the place before but after seeing that video I decided to give them a shot tonight. It was well worth every mile and penny ! Fair prices, good service, and even better food. I got breaded mushrooms and a cheese steak. The owner told me he had no clue who JL was when he came to the spot, but he is now subscribed to him and his business has been suddenly exponentially higher ever since JL visited and posted. They have been open for 33 years. He told me that he hoped I enjoy the food, well here I am to confirm that I did and I WILL definitely be back when I crave a cheese steak, although I might go Italian next time. He was so excited about the increase in business. I've been going to way too many chain spots lately so it feels good to support local. Definitely check this spot out ! This is why I wanna do food reviews myself. You never know who...
