I usually love this shop but today I had a terrible experience. There were multiple doordashers in the store waiting for orders so I knew it was going to be a bit of a wait. I called ahead at 9:44 and got there to pay at 10:09, I know this because it says exactly when on the receipt. I sit there and they have a cart for pickup orders in front as well as one they’re putting behind the counter which I assume is for unpaid call in orders (spoiler: it’s not) so a few of the doordashers are already annoyed waiting and some try to peek at the cart where they’re putting orders behind the counter, one of the employees tells them “one moment” and the mood in there gets confrontational which does not make me want to be here at all. They call a few orders that have numbers above mine which tells me they definitely didn’t make mine until I paid as well. They start calling names for DoorDash orders as well and start handing from the cart I guess we’re not allowed to see as well as some regular orders they just hand over from the prep area. Eventually as the store starts to clear out they ask what my number was and I tell them and they hand it to me from the cart they were guarding. The issue with that is they knew other peoples order numbers and were looking out for them and forgot about me just sitting there trying not to add to the confrontational setting. I sat there for a good 20 minutes waiting for them to call my number when it had been done the whole time and I didn’t get it because I just let them do their thing since it was so busy and didn’t want to add to their stress. So I feel like I was punished for being overly polite and my patience was not rewarded. If you guys read this I really hope you just start calling every name and number so your customers don’t feel like they’re just wasting their time like I did. Maybe tell DoorDash and other delivery services you don’t want to do their orders anymore because you clearly cannot handle it when it gets too busy.I feel like I’m nothing but understanding and patient other times and always leave a tip when I have cash so I guess I just expected better service and more respect...
Read moreI give 5 stars because this place has the best food and it is very cozy and quaint. The people are friendly and nice every time. However, I recommend going in and placing your order face to face and ensuring accuracy before paying. The one girl gets my order wrong every time I call and place it. However, the manager (I believe she’s the manager or owner) always fixes it quick and to perfection. My only complaint is the girl taking the orders over the phone. VERY NICE GIRL but even when it’s repeated back to me, she still rings it in wrong more often than not. Don’t let that stop you from this amazing little restaurant. It’s great in so many ways
Update: Well they lost a customer, I hate to say it and I’ll leave the 5 stars they do deserve it, just a bad day I guess, new ppl maybe? I ordered over the phone as I usually do and the woman who took my order said “anything else” about 6 times interrupting me, rushing me off the phone, did not repeat my order back as they usually do. I go in and I wait at least 8 minutes (while her and they guy are having a private conversation and customers are waiting) then she tells me they are out of the bagel I ordered and didn’t start the order. I decided to respectfully get my money back but then waited about 15 minutes with my dogs in the car for someone to do the refund, he didn’t even apologize. Nothing. Terrible service. Josh? Idk I think that was his name. I’m done. Tried to give more chances but I don’t deserve to be treated like that. Thanks to the woman manager/owner who was always...
Read moreQuality of the Marco Polo (bagel with Lox) is excellent. The portion is generous. So when I eat Bagels and Lox (with cream cheese, capers, tomato, onion) am I eating Lox or am I eating smoked salmon? When I lived in the Philadelphia area I could not afford either. However quickly when I could afford it I had bagels and lox or was it smoked salmon? I often have bagels and lox (or smoked salmon) at a place in Newark DE. Love it. It is not cheap but the portions are huge...so to me it is a bargain.
So both smoked salmon and lox start out the same. Both are cured in salt. Lox is not cooked *. Origin? I read where the word "lox" is thought to derive from the Yiddish word "laks," referring to salmon. However, the dish actually originated in Scandinavian cuisine before spreading to Eastern Europe's Jewish population.
Smoked salmon begins the same way as lox, with a salt cure. However, the curing time is shorter than that of lox — typically only a day — which makes smoked salmon less salty.
After brining, smoked salmon goes into a smoker, where it picks up the flavor of whatever wood is being used.
Nova? The popular bagel topping most people think of as lox is actually a variety of smoked salmon called Nova which originated in Nova Scotia. * In the end though it is basically raw like lox. Clear? Clear as mud.
Anyway the most recent bagels and lox or smoked salmon I have had is from 'The Original Hot Bagels on East Chestnut Hill Road (rte 4). Well I looked it up. Their lox bagel is called a Marco Polo. It IS made with...
